For those who have leveled....got some questions.

Post by hammer40 » Mon Aug 22, 2016 9:58 pm

I put on the Truxxx 1.5" level this last weekend and have a couple questions for you guys that have leveled out your PW's.

Did you need/chose to align afterwards? If so, what Settings would you recommend?

Would a new adjustable track bar be warranted only going up 1.5"? I do see that the axle was pushed to the drivers side a bit.

Thanks,

-Jeff

I have not leveled mine but am farmiliar with this stuff.

Is a track bar needed? Well, it is if you want the axle centered. The stock one will function fine until it gets wore out, but your axle will not be centered.

As far as alignment. Your caster has changed a bit, which you should be able to adjust with the cam bolts a bit. Your steering wheel is probly off center a bit, which is also easily adjustable.

How does it drive and handle so far?

I don't know if the newer trucks are the same, but on a third gen you don't use the adjustable track bar to center the axle at ride height, you adjust it so the track bar bracket on the frame doesnt hit the axle side coil bucket on full bump. A lifted or leveled 3rd gen when setup correctly has the front axle slightly offset. It doesn't effect driveability at all

It drives and handles just fine. The steering wheel may be cocked a bit. I have 38K on it now and may look into a Thuren track bar at some point.

I just want to make sure the tires are going to wear as even as possible.

Simply by leveling a solid axle truck won't have any ill effects to tire wear.
Track bar just moves the axle left or right, the tires are still parallel.
The caster won't change enough to cause any wear with less than 2" of lift, mainly just a little different in handling. By lifting, you are rolling the front axle forward a hair which can cause a looser feeling in the steering. Easily corrected with the cam bolts. If you feel that it is driving fine, dont worry about it.
The camber is a non-issue since it is non adjustable unless you purchase offset ball joints, but again, lifting doesn't not change camber anyway on a solid axle.
The toe is the main factor in tire wear as far as alignment is concerned, lifting doesn't change this as long as nothing was taken loose in the process.

If your steering wheel is a little of center, just simply adjust the drag link a little bit. Wallah!!! That would drive me NUTS.

He won't be able to center his axle, his track bar is already the maximum length he can uses before there is metal on metal contact.

Reset the toe to 0 and center the wheel, leave everything else alone.

Wow. Yeah, definitely close tollerances around that area.

I would imagine that if added bumpstops were installed than you could recenter the axle again.

Speaking off adding bumpstop, does everyone running 35s or 37s extend the bumpstops? That was always a given with the jk. Bumpstop size was kinda warranted by tire size.

That is, unless you like cutting sheetmetal

Not so much need for extended bump stops on a PW because there is room in the wheelwells for a little more tire, sometimes with a little trimming.

Extended bumps come into play when you add shock extensions to be able to use the OEM shocks with spacers. You don't want the shocks to be your bump stops. If you change shocks for longer units, maybe not needed. Cycling the suspension is the best way to determine the need, and the best way to do that is remove the springs. It takes a little work. One of the reasons to buy a tested kit rather than piece one together, unless you are ok with doing your own R&D.

Will do Black Hawk...soon. I made an appointment today to get the alignment done and a couple different sets of rims caught my eye. I was going to stay stock but I think my tires would be happier on a wider rim. I have two days to decide.
