Pinion seal leak

Post by jsemm » Tue Aug 16, 2016 10:04 am

I have had the front pinion seal go out for its third time now. The dealer is replacing the entire front axel different and axel housing. I feel that Thierry mechanic just doesn't know how to replace a pinion seal the right way because it was the same mechanic every time. My truck has been at the dealer for two weeks and they still don't have all the parts and they claim they need a "SPECIAL TOOL" to work on it because the parts have been upgraded. It's a 2013 pw has anyone heard of the truck having upgraded parts needing a special tool. I'm about to call by on these guys they are just dragging Thier feet. Maybe it has different bearings than stock or something

Ask them if you can skip a payment this month, since they've had your truck for so long. :o
Also, ask them to check your vent hose to make sure it's not plugged. Pressure can build and fluid will find the path of least resistance. :patriot:

There is a tool for the locker assy. that most dealerships don't have/or bought. Since they see so few PW's. Why buy it.

That is not needed just to replace the pinion seal though, is it ?

I thought that was only if they were removing the entire insides ?

jsemm said in his post. That the dealer is replacing the axle housing. So they need to pull everything out.

To correctly change a pinion seal you need to pull the carrier (all the insides too). You can guestimate the pinion torque but you run the risk of damaging the ring and pinion.

ETA: If this is the third seal I'd ask to see the pinion yoke.

Why do they think the housing is bad?

They contacted Chrysler and that's what they told them to do. They must think its bad because its the third one that's gone bad in 28,000 miles. Someone mentioned on this thread that the proper way to replaced it is take everything apart. They haven't been doing that. Its been at the dealer over two weeks. I guess they don't work on power wagons much so I'm expecting it to be back in three weeks which is a very long time not to have a truck. I think its at least a three day job from start to finish and they haven't started anything yet. They are still waiting on the tool they need.

It's impossible to set pinion preload with the carrier in the housing.
