Tire pressure opinions
I am interested in knowing what tire pressure everyone is running unloaded?
I just put Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx 285/75/17 on my 2016 and am not 100% sure what I should be running. These are load range E tires yet are rated for the same 3195 (approx) Lbs as the load range D tires. The tire shop aired them up to 70 PSI and the truck rode like a cement truck on the way home. I aired them down to around 54 PSI and will suffer with the TPMS light for better ride quality and tire wear.
54 PSI is much better but If I could go down to 45 or 48 I would prefer to.
Just wondering what you guys are running for ride quality and optimal tire wear around town and unloaded?

I run the 31570-17's on my truck at 35 psi around town, 50 when on extended highway or towing a 3,000# trailer.

35 back 45 front for me but your tire maybe slightly different. Get them dirty and drive on a straight road to see the wear pattern (or chalk them) I suspect the outer tread isn't touching in the back with 54lbs, you'll wear out the center of the tire that way.

Factory tires wore fine at the ridiculous pressures they recommend; my toyos were wearing uneven on the back. Finally found a dealer willing to change the factory TPMS thresholds. We'll see if I can manage to run proper psi with no dash lights.

Are they really 285/75/17's, or 285/70/17's? I thought they only made the 70 series.

To make sure you get the full gamut of responses, I figured I'd chime in. I always run the "ridiculous" pressures that are recommended or max supported by the tire if it's higher. It's true that the ride is a little harsher when empty, but I can't stand the slower steering response with even slightly lower pressures on the highway. My truck pretty much always gets used as a truck to haul or tow something - it's not my daily driver.
You're not going to wear out your tires any faster if you run them near max rated pressure on the road - they were designed, belted, and tested to work that way. Of course if someone gets off trying to spin them all the time on purpose then they're gonna wear out.
Also, if you run a tire on a rim width that it wasn't designed for, it might work, but you also may experience a loss of traction or abnormal tire wear regardless of what pressure you choose.

Are they really 285/75/17's, or 285/70/17's? I thought they only made the 70 series.
Well i will be gol darned, they do have the 75 series. At least on their tire size list on the website.

No load, 45 front, 35 rear. With load, then I up the pressure. Can't stand feeling like a basket ball at the recommended pressures when empty.

Thanks guys... Good info here. Yes, Cooper does make the Maxx in 285/75/17 which is load E. Currently they are on backorder status and I had to search far and wide to get them from a vendor that had older stock. The Rep at Cooper advised that they will be available again 3-4 weeks from now. I didn't want to wait that long. Ended up selling my Duratracs with 200 miles on them to a guy on craigslist for $1000.00. Not too bad as far as I am concerned.
Regarding pressures.... I would love to follow the specs on the tire or the placard on the lock pillar but MI roads are TERRIBLE. As I said, the tire shop aired them up to 70 PSI when they were mounted by that pressure was completely unacceptable. Even the slightest bump and the truck felt like it was going to jump lanes. 54 PSI was better, but I still think less air would be optimal. I had the same tires but 285/70/17 on my 1500 Silverado and ran them at 30-35 PSI around town. They wore nicely and rode extremely well. Given that this truck is heavier, I am going to try 40 in the back and 45 up front. See how that works. I do like the chalk suggestion and may try that. The truck is used primarily as a daily driver and is unloaded most of the time. Just trying to get a feel for what others are doing.

Another option for determining correct air pressure for your situation is to use an infrared thermometer to see what temp different portions of the tread are reaching and adjust pressure up or down until it's as uniform as possible across the tread surface. Depends on how nerdy you're feeling lol

FWIW... I have a 2005 Ram 1500 (obviously lighter than the PW's), and I run my 285/70R17 Duratracs at 45 front / 40 rear. That gives me the best equalized wear both front and rear when empty or with a light load (bikes and coolers).

I find the chalk method to work the best. I ended up at 42 front and 37 rear on my 2009 no major winch rigging gear and a full tank. You have to do the chalk test when the tires are fairly new though.

Went out and chalk tested my 37" Grabbers today and ended up with 40 front 30 rear. Seems quite low but that made the front wear perfect and the rear still had a little chalk left on the outside edge of the outside tread blocks.

I run 40psi all the way around on my 35x12.5x18 unless I'm towing then I put in 60psi, especially in the TX summer heat.
