sand tire pressure

Post by Black Pearl » Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:44 am

So I am heading up to the Paso Robles area of central California for a 2 day hunting class and we are going to goof off for a bit in the Pismo dunes on the way. I was thinking about putting the tire pressure at 20-22 psi on the 37 toyo RTs.
And will the locker bypass in 2wd damage the rear end?
Hope to get pics but my phone is so lame. I hope my buddy can help in that department!
Thanks, Sean

I've never ran those particular tires but I'd start at 28ish and work down if needed, the Geolander AT/S that I had did very well at 28, I didn't want to go lower here because of occasion hard bumps if going too fast and didn't want to bottom out on rim. If in all soft sand, lower shouldn't be a problem. Lock 'er up in 2wd, wont hurt a thing.

I was at Florence Oregon ladt summer and heading there again in 2 weeks. I was at about 22 psi and it was terrible. Sand was soft and with both lockers couldn't climb a hill every other truck was getting up, embarrassed /mad. Went down to about 12 psi and made huge difference, cruised right up.. That was 315 Duratracs that were pretty new.

I run 20 psi front/rear out in the sand dunes in the desert it seems to be just right with my 35's, I use my locker bypass in 4HI and lock the rear axle it helps with steering in sand to have the front axle engaged.

I've gone as low as 8 in silt. It's phenomenal what that does for floatation. I'd buried the truck to the sliders at 15 PSI, and was able to drive it out by rocking it back and forth a few times.

Toyo's are stiff tires. In sand I would start at 20 psi and go down from there if you have any problems. I had one episode where I got stuck in sand in a two wheel drive pickup (stock street tires), and after airing down to 7 psi I drove right out.

On my '01 Ram with stock 17" 1500 wheels, I never popped a bead, I would tear sidewalls all the time with my Pro Comps. With 2500 wheels, I would pop beads below 15-16 psi with 37" Kralwers. 18 psi on the front, 15 on the rear was good.

With 42" Iroks and beadlocks, I lose inners below 12 psi on the front and 8 on the rear. Similar weight and distribution to the PW.

I've been to the dunes twice now with my '07, and with nokian 315s on stock wheels I've had great luck running between 15-18 psi. I believe I could go lower, as well, and I'm a fairly aggressive driver.

I must have different sand then yall, I have never once aired down. My tires are at 50 psi all the time. Gone thru some pretty soft sand but never aired down.

It all depends on the sand like Cactus Red pointed out. In super soft silty stuff you will need go as low as you can without popping bead. Some places you can pull off the road and run all day without touching the valve stems.

We typically go down to 20 as a starting point and then drop more if we get in trouble. You will have to play around with it once you get there and see how soft it is.

It usually pays to listen to the locals too:

I ran the stock duratracs at 22 front and 18 rear and that worked pretty well. Definitely made the tires squat a lot more than 12 psi did with my jeep

Great pic older!!!!
So my buddy has some pics and ill see if i can get one up. Aired down to 28 and did quite well. Definitely need to be aware of things out there. Some of the lips look like little things and they could ruin your day for sure. We hit it on quick notice and i don't have a flag, so not wanting to be unsafe a receive a ticket we were quite cautious because the place was packed w people!!!
37 inch RT's are a huge improvement over the stock 33. Not even close to how it feels now.
Thanks for the help

Yes, you have to be very smart about where you stop and how you take off... shit can so south in a hurry. And unless you have another vehicle or a pull pal with you, you may be digging for a long time.

And yes, the cliffs can be very deceiving. For example, that pic above. That was at the top of a very steep, fairly long climb which I had plenty of speed to make, but as soon as I starting reaching the top it looked like the dang thing dropped right back off. Tapped the brake and momentum did not carry me anywhere near as far as planned. Instantly framed out. Done. Hahahaha, fun times!

While working at the Parker Challenge a few years ago, I got stuck in silt. Tires were 35/12.5-17 BFG mudders (worst tire I ever owned by the way). Went dow to the frame rails once I broke thru the crust. Aired down to 8 PSI, and rocked it back and forth, and it came out. The silt flowed like water back into the holes. The grass flattened in the middle is from the skid plates.
