Broken Exhaust stud

Post by Jbostick » Thu Jul 14, 2016 8:46 am

Hey guys,
I have a broken exhaust stud on the drivers side head/manifold. I have 4 new studs, 4 bolts, and a manifold gasket to instal that i bought from the dealership. I am wanting opionions on weather to use anti-sieze on the bolts and studs when i instal them. There is some kind of red hardened liquid already on the bolts and studs from the dealership that i am assuming is locktite but i don't know that for sure. What have you guys done ?

I did the job last year, if using factory hardware the pre applied goop should be fine. It's kind of a pain in the a** but doable. If it comes to it, a right angle drill is your friend. I had 4 to do, 2 backed out and two had to be drilled. Good luck sir!

When you get the manifold off, lay a straight edge across the face of it to check for warpage. I've seen them 1/4" out. This is the cause of the broken bolts to begin with. A good machine shop can resurface it for you, or buy a new manifold. In the past I've resurfaced my own with a full-size shop belt sander. Killed the belt sander when metal dust got into the motor and shorted it out.. But it worked!

Yup, check for flatness. Both of mine were warped the last time I had it done, noticed the stud broke again. Need to get it back to the shop soonish...

Mine had a broken stud last year. Turned out the right manifold was also cracked. The Hemi Tick seemed to be getting louder.

I will be sure to check with a straight edge. Thanks for the suggestions

Next you do this. Use WD40 on the belt. Used to do this on split lines on steam turbines and gas turbines. Do a blue check on the mating surfaces, then grind down the high spots. Then finish with a honing stone and WD40 by hand.

That's an under appreciated art form right there!

Mine had been ticking loudly upon start up and getting quieter as the engine warmed up. Had it in today and confirmed it had a broken stud too. 2012 with 46,xxx on it. Right side of the engine. We are still under warranty so I did not have to tackle this myself, this time.

Is there a better fix for this as I assume it will be an ongoing issue? ARP kit and headers? Something else?

Buy new headers, they are warping & causing the bolts to break. Buy new headers & have them ceramic coated, a few of us have done this. Otherwise it's a constant ongoing issue. There are also updated headers, gaskets & hardware, if I remember correctly...make sure the updated products are used.

I will do my homework and do that. Not a huge issue while we are under warranty but I don't want to be footing the bill to replace them over and over again after it expires.

Thanks for the info.
