service 4wd light.....

Post by shayzj » Mon May 02, 2016 2:30 pm

I know this topic comes up alot so I have read all I can find on here about it. Most people have flashing lights for the lockers. I do not but the swaybar won't disconnect neither will the lockers. 05 model with 60K on the clock and the connection at the swaybar is spotless.

So purchased a new smart bar. Just got it installed and things were looking up. SVC 4wd light is out and the bar and lockers are working great. Well then I went a short ways down the road and and bingo the damn light comes on again.

Well that means swaybar is good as are the lockers. What is kicking that light on again is the question. Wire harness looks neat and undamaged. Dielectric grease in the connector. I am at a loss where to look next. I can hardwire the lockers sure but I still want to disconnect the sway bar from inside.

Any Ideas

TIA Shay

Can you have a dealer pull a code?

Cheaper than throwing parts at it...

#1 Check for trouble codes, either with a scan tool or the old key method. It could be some other problem totally unrelated with the swaybar/lockers.

I believe a new smart bar needs to be programmed into the trucks computer by the dealer you might want to call and ask to see if that's correct.

I did not know about the programming will look into that. I have a cheap code reader but it brought up nothing.

Do you have a service 4wd light on too? The sensor tells the truck if it's in 4wd. If it's reading wrong, the sway bar disconnect won't work because the truck is seeing an error and it "might" be in 2wd, so no sway bar and no lockers. On our work trucks we had a lot of issues with the sensor in the transfer case.

yes svc 4wd light is all I have. Nothing works while that is on including swaybar. Hmmm TCPS could be an issue maybe.

9 times outta 10 the svc 4wd light is transfer case position sensor related. Especially if everything is working properly some of the time.

Well I finally got my tcps changed out for a brand new one. Same friggin problem. Don't know what else to do.

I was hoping that was the ticket. Guess not. Bad wire somewhere is the only other thing I can think of.

Any new ideas?

Shift linkage not adjusted correctly?

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Good topic for me too. 2005 and just turned 60,000 miles on a trip to Utah this week. SERV4WD is "on", RR blinking while in 2wd. Sway bar will disconnect. Lockers won't lock in 4wd. Just returned today from trip and didn't want this. It was never in 4wd when this started. Just driving down freeway.

On drive back I was wondering if this was some kind of reminder message to change diff fluid at 60k miles. Probably not .

I get the same thing in my '06.
I have changed fluid on both diffs, cleaned both magnets, cleaned the smart bar connector and greased it up, swapped the transfer case switch for a new one.

It's probably the smart bar internals.

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes and hook it back up. Could be a glitch...?

Screw it, hard wire the lockers and then custom build you a 12v linear actuator for the swaybar that you can operate from within the cab.

This is an example, stroke is adjustable from 0"-2", it only takes about an inch to operate the swaybar. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Linear-Actuat ... 0437730202

Well I feel like an idiot...which I am obviously. Went out and disconnected the battery and the locker bypass and put it back to factory wiring and all is good. Tried this before but did not reset with battery. Oh well I have a couple of good spare parts.

I may give the battery disconnect a try.
