2016 PW Valve train clatter

Post by Bigskyguy1976 » Wed Apr 27, 2016 10:20 am

I thought I read about this in another post but couldn't locate it.

I have a 2016 Power Wagon Tradesman with 6.4l MDS Hemi. I traded my 2012 Power Wagon for it (and regretted it ever since...)

It has 3200 miles on it now. I've owned it since early January.

I'm hearing a lot of valve train clatter upon start up and 10-15 seconds after it start up. I think I recall others talking about this as "normal" for the 6.4L MDS.

Can someone please refresh me as to what the discussion was about this?

Might not be valve train that you're hearing, there is a known wrist pin issue.

My 2015 can be rather noisy on startup. At this point I'm ignoring it. My previous 2010 ram 2500 with the 5.7 would knock on cold startup. Dodge replaced the short block around 30,000 with a new factory short block. The new short block ended up knocking just as bad as the old one.

IMHO, Dodge/Ram engines are generally noisier that Gm/Ford engines. If your not happy have it diagnosed at the dealer but you'd be surprised how many of us have noisy engines also.

Fwiw, my 6.4 is quieter than my 5.7 (both blocks).

Try a different oil next oil change, my 5.7 was noisy every time I let the dealer change the oil back when it was new. I started doing it myself and use Mobile one, almost instantly it was more quiet and has been ever since on start up.
The oil they call for is like water also, real thin.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.
