Looking at an 05 PW. I have a few questions

Post by PW Fan » Sun Apr 24, 2016 8:37 pm

I'm looking at a Reg Cab 8' Bed PowerWagon.

Few questions:

Service 4WD light on. Why? What does it mean/need?

I popped the truck into 4-Lo to make sure lockers
n sway bar worked. But none of the lights lit up.
I was expecting them to atleast blink, or something.

Why didn't anything happen? Blown Fuse?

I don't know a lot about them yet but from what I read probably and issue with the smart bar. They get corroded or a bad connection at the plug and causes a lot of issues

I have an 05 power wagon. if its the smart bar the locker light will also blink. Im on my second smart bar. The sway bar will still disconnect but the lockers wont engage. Theres nothing wrong with the lockers its all coming from the smart bar. The 2005 smart bars are $260 which is a lot cheaper than the gen 4s. They are big money. I would clean the contacts and see if it works. Im thinking of hard wiring in my lockers so I don't have to mess with that stupid smart bar.

Try popping the connector off the smartbar and reconnect it. Might have some corrosion on the pins. If that don't work. The circuit board inside the smartbar might be bad.

if you pursuing purchasing said vehicle, i would make the owner fix the issues prior to making an offer on it.

You may look into whether or not your 4wd is out. Could be the issue.

You can try to get your hands on a bypass kit. That's what I did on my 05

So, back to this 05 Reg Cab 8' bed PW.

The owner (now 62?) bought it new years ago, he
never used it to do any hard core wheeling in it.
Never been a plow truck or anything like that, I
know this because its 1 of my fathers friends.

Is there anywhere I can go that can tell me why
the SRVS 4WD light is for? Will a scanner tell me?

That light sets a code(s) when it is on. Yes, a scanner will read the code. I don't think the basic scanners can read the driveline codes.

I also have 05 regular cab....with the same light on. Dealers can read codes. Mine wanted $130.00. I have started looking to see just what price scanner can read those codes.

Until I can get code I will be looking at smartbar and checking connections to lockers.

The 05 regular cab had VERY low production numbers. The last 4 or so numbers of the VIN are numbered in sequence. Mine was 992.

Locker problems can be anything from loose wire to needing new parts inside diffs. Cheap to very expensive. You can go crazy looking at videos and reading forums to find answers. It seems like there is no "usual" suspect to fix.

If you like the truck and can get good price all the 4 wheel drive stuff still works except for lockers. Good luck.

Fuses. There are two or three fuses marked 4x4 (under hood ....inside electrical box) front drivers side. Number 28 is 10 amps and number 43 is 25 amps. Because no lights go on it may be an easy place to start looking.

It could be many things, from inexpensive to very expensive to repair. A Ram dealer could read it. I don't know if your standard parts store reader goes deep enough into the modules to find that one.

I know from personal experience that the dealer scanners can see codes that my scanner does not see. Considering the cost of potential repairs and the cost of the truck, it would be worth it to have a dealer scan for all codes just so you have a better idea what you are getting into. Also have the dealer check for recalls and TSBs. My '05 has always worked fine, but I think there have been three steering recalls over the years, plus the airbag recall.
