Winch Specs
I'm posting the numbers from the standard Warn 12K - ours is different, but I can't find any specs for the PW regarding line speed/amps/pulling power per wrap.
Can anyone verify these are correct? I knew the winch was slow, but I didn't think is was THAT slow...
The thing that throws me off is the gear ratio. The only winch from Warn that uses 315:1 is the 15K The second set of data is for that winch - slower yet...

Re: Winch Specs
here is a response from Warn regarding my 05' pw winch (i have a 12' PW now)
"The cable Dodge specified for the application was 90ft of 7/16th, the replacement part number is 61950. This is typically what we would put on a M15000. The internals of the winch on the power wagon is all rated to 12000, so you can replace it with 125ft of 3/8th, part number 38423 if you wish."

Re: Winch Specs
Our winch is the 15,000lb one. They just rated it lower for liability reasons. Cable is the same, gear ratio is the same, hp is the same, housing is the same. Some times the limiting factor on a winch's rating is how it is mounted. I read somewhere & also just seen it on PowerBlock's Exteme 4x4, that in order for it to be rated at 15k, it needs to be mounted with the bolt holes facing forward, otherwise it is rated at 12k if the bolt holes face down.

Re: Winch Specs
So it gets a higher rating if the load on the bolts is in tension, rather than in shear? Intuitively, I woulda thunk just the opposite, Need to look up values on those bolts. Anybody what the bolt specs are?

Re: Winch Specs
Found this on the Fastenall site:
Here is the whole article:
http://www.fastenal.com/content/feds/pd ... Design.pdf
Did not see anything specific about Grade 8 bolts, except that G8 are usually below 40 HRC, so would guess the above applies. Seems that testing for shear strength is more complicated than for tensile strength, and values are stated conservatively because there is a greater variety of load possibilities on bolts in shear. When no shear strength is given for common carbon steels with hardness up to 40 HRC, 60 % of the
ultimate tensile strength of the bolt is typically used as acceptable shear strength. Note: the shear strength
must fall within the constraints of a suitable safety factor. This formula should only be used as an
estimation.

Re: Winch Specs
We had this discussion over on DT some time ago. Somebody had the specs for both the M1200 and M1500. Everything on the M1500 matched what is on the PW if I remember correctly. And somebody used the parts from a M1500 on their factory winch. Can't remember who it was.
Check over on the FAQ thread at DT. The specs should be in there.

Re: Winch Specs
I do know that our'12,000' lb winch......has all the internals of the 15,000. Its a 315:1 gear ratio, which only comes in the 15,000 lb'r. We have a 15,000, dodge just had them put a 12,000 lb sticker on it for liability. That's why Warn won't answer any questions if they know we're talking about the PW winch.

Don't let the 12000k rating fool you the specs are identical to the M15000. I think Mopar under rated it most likely for warranty purposes. The Gear Ratio is 315:1 just like the M15000 not 261:1 like the M12000.

Re: Winch Specs
Thanks - that clarifies it. So, the PW winch is slow, very slow at 2.5 ft/min at max load. The SmittyBilt XRC8 we just put on the Jeep pulls 8.4 ft/min at max load. Heck the PW winch only pulls at 3.7 ft/min at 8000K. Guess it's all about the gear ratios...

Re: Winch Specs
Unless you have a big ass battery under the hood or dual batteries &/or a high amp alt, you will NEVER be able to fully utilize the power of your winch. Our stock electrical systems are just not up to the task. Our winch at full load can draw 440 amps !!! That is some SERIOUS power draw. When i put my dual batt set up it made a night & day difference in how the winch worked. The motor never even changed pitch. Stock system--it was straining bigtime just pulling my truck.

I was truely amazed that at full draw it was 460 amps! People did not believe me that I could kill the battery with 2 heavy full pulls. I would tell them----like at the size of the wires----they are big for a reason. Looks like they should have been even bigger!!!

Yup, since I put in the DiaHard Platinum G31M w/ 1150A extra capacity and 0/1 cable feeding the system, the winch is happy. Re: Winch Specs
Used to have one on my Montero. Quiet, steady, can pull all day long. In fact at rated load it's just about as fast or faster than electrical.
MileMarker 12k - 5.6 ft/min at 12000lb on 1 layer of cable 3.5 GPM at 1500 PSI. Anyone knows what our pump is rated at?
One advantage of electrical is that it will speed up if load drops.

Warn press release regarding the Power Wagon Winch
![]()
New Dodge Ram Power Wagon Features Integral Winch System Specifically Developed for Chrysler Group by Warn Industries
Clackamas, OR. (July 12, 2004) Off-road enthusiasts who've been anticipating the 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon- which was first shown last month-will be doubly pleased that each rig pickup truck will be equipped with a winch system from Warn Industries. Integral to the vehicle's bumper system is a specially engineered version of Warn's winch, "a product that befits what we believe is the most capable off-road truck on the market," said DaimlerChrysler CEO, Dieter Zetche.
The result of two-plus years of development, the Dodge Ram Power Wagon's Winch is a product of Warn's unique OEM collaborative engineering program. Working closely with Chrysler Group engineers, Warn configured the Ram Power Wagon's winch specifically to accommodate the capabilities of the truck, while also enabling it to be integrated into the Power Wagon as part of the vehicle assembly process. This approach ensures that the winch not only meets Chrysler Group's stringent OEM specifications, but functions in close concert with the technology advancements that define Power Wagon as a performance leader in its category.
"We are delighted to have partnered with Chrysler Group in providing a factory-installed winch system for the 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon," said Tom Giacomini, Chief Operating Officer of Warn Industries. "This partnership resulted in a Warn Winch system that significantly enhances the Dodge Ram Power Wagon's functionality and marketability, and it further positions validates Warn Industries as the acknowledged leader in application engineering of winch systems for OEM light truck and ATV projects".
Based on Warn's Heavyweight Winch Series, the Dodge Ram Power Wagon Winch offers the performance serious off-roaders expect in a big truck winch. This begins with the winch's massive, 136-lb. (62 kgs.) steel chassis, and extends to its high strength carrier plates supporting the 3-stage planetary gear train with its 315:1 reduction. The combination of a 12V, 4.6 hp Series Wound motor, rotating ring gear clutch and automatic direct drive cone brake give the winch its 12,000 lb. (5440 kgs.) pulling capacity.
Also standard on the winch are advancements that accommodate the demanding conditions under which the Dodge Ram Power Wagon is expected to operate. Key among these are a thermal protection system that senses excessive heat-from heavy and/or prolonged winching-and shuts the winch off until an acceptable temperature is achieved-thus ensuring long motor life. A second important feature is the winch's low voltage interrupt capability, which produces a 30-second pause when the Power Wagon experiences a voltage level of 9.75 volts, thereby protecting the truck's electronics.
Warn supplies the Dodge Ram Power Wagon Winch with 90-ft. (27m) of 7/16-in. (11 mm) diameter wire rope, a large latched hook and is operated with an industrial-grade remote control unit with a convenient 12-ft. (3.7m) lead.
Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche has been quoted as saying: "the Dodge Ram Power Wagon is the most capable off-road pickup truck on the market". "Warn feels that the most capable off-road pickup truck should have a winch that performs at the same high level" said Tom Giacomini, Chief Operating Officer of Warn Industries.

Cactus Red wrote:Thanks - that clarifies it.
Just my opinion, but unless you are racing you want a slow winch. Winching is inherently dangerous, and should be done slowly in a controlled and thought out manner. Again, just my opinion

Re: Winch Specs
True, but I use a snatch block to shorten the line if required, and it gets really tedious at less than 2 feet per minute. Fortunately, I've only loaded the winch to full capacity a few times, all when moving dead and down trees via sub rigs to redirect the pull perpendicular to the road. The last time was on a 2' trunk dia x 60' pine, and it moved it the last few feet at a crawl when the roots and bottom of the stump started to dig in. We've had bark bettle kills in the forest, so every spring there are dead and downs all over.
I'm just along for the ride...
Re: Winch Specs
Yes, there ARE times when i wish it was a little faster---not gonna lie about that-----BUT I would not trade that for the slow line speed when actually winching. I like a slow speed when winching. Gives you time to look at how everything is going & time to stop before you destroy something. Ever see a tierod get caught on a tree root ? With a fast line speed, the damage will be done by the time it stops. If i was running a competition, fast line speed would be more desireable. I also usually use a snatchblock so that slows it down by half again. To each their own, but i am good with the stock line speed.
