Cold start: Does this sound normal?

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

Cold start: Does this sound normal?

Post by LagunaH1 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 12:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm getting to know my new truck and have been wondering about how the truck sounds when I start it cold.

Here is a video of how the truck sounds when I do a cold start:

The sound that bugs me is the "ticking" (pinging?)

Does this sound normal? This noise goes away almost completely once the truck warms up. I'm running 91 octane gas.

I'm in the process of uploading a similar video, recorded with a warm engine. I'll update my post once the 2nd video has been posted on Youtube.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

No, doesn't sound like that. The noise I''m wondering about is a high pitched chirping / pinging

Mine sounds exactly the same, I'm assuming it's normal.

My 2015 sounds the same when cold, you can save some money on fuel and use 87 octane or 89

My 2010 never liked 87, lots of pinging. Plus it got worse mpg, the increase in mpg running higher octane offset the cost. But I run a custom 93 octane tune now and it's more quiet, stronger and better mpg than it ever was stock.

Finally got around to uploading the video of the engine sound when warm:
phpBB [video]

To me, there is a noticeable difference between "cold sound" and "warm sound". The cold sound has a more pronounced ticking / pinging while the warm sound has just about no ticking / pinging.

-Maybe I'm just not used to how RAM engines sound......
