Opinions Wanted

Post by coder » Thu Dec 10, 2015 3:53 pm

Need some help troubleshooting a high pitched whining sound I have been occasionally hearing for several months now. Any and all thoughts or opinions, or similar experiences are wanted. Thanks in advance!

Symptoms:
- I first noticed it after I replaced a worn out fan clutch (more drag on the drivetrain when fan kicks in), I return the first one and put on another just incase, and the sound is still there.
- A slight high pitched whine during deceleration that last for 1-3 seconds then goes away
- It's not very loud, I cannot force it to happen, it only occurs occasionally maybe 1-2 times during a 30-60 minute drive around town.
- Seems to happen when I let up on the pedal right after the transmission shifts into higher gear like 4th or 5th but the transmission works fine.
- Does not seem to be RPM or speed specific
- Is more notable when the A/C is on (more drag on the drivetrain), I replaced the accumulator and compressor so it's not he A/C

What I think it's not: (at least I don't think so)
- Not coming from the engine or belt-drive area everything has been replaced or checked (belts, pulleys, pumps, etc.)

Possible causes:
#1) Transmission maybe the torque converter or pump?
#2) front differential (I had mine go out a few years ago and it is a different sound)
#3) rear differential (I don't think so it sounds like it's coming from the front half of the vehicle)
#4) driveshaft/u-joint that as dried out
#5) Normal sounds from a transmission with 130k miles
#6) Other?

Check your idler pulley. An alternator can also do this if the bearings are starting to fail. Check your throttle body bolts too. Highly unlikely but intake leaks can make strange noise as well. Good luck!

Beat me to the intake leak...

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

I have one too. I think mine is the door gaskets/seals. But mine is more of a whistle & is constant @ highway speed.
