2016 Fuel Milage

Post by MoparToYou » Thu Nov 26, 2015 6:32 am

I'm starting to think this MDS thing actually works, because at times I've seen some surprisingly good fuel mileage from my 2016 Power Wagon. On the way home from the dealership I traveled 130 miles of two lane scenic highway, with speed limits of 55 to 65 mph, and varied speed a lot for engine break in, and I got 15.5 mpg. That kind of surprised me, and I figured it was just a fluke. The next 600 miles were spent towing an 18' tilt bed auto transport trailer, with a 1300 lb UTV on it, and I averaged 12.0 mpg for the whole 600 miles. Around town driving isn't so good; I get about 10.5 mpg when driving the truck to work and back every day, with all city driving. Then my next real trip without a trailer, also on 55 to 65 mph roads, I got 15.5 mpg again. I guess the trip home from the dealer wasn't a fluke after all. After this second trip that got me 15.5 mpg on the highway, I spent an entire day exploring the high desert of eastern Nevada, and logged a hundred miles or so of off road use, exploring dirt roads. I let the truck idle for 20 minutes at the end of that trip while airing up the tires with my portable air compressor, and at the end of the idle time I checked the trip meter, and saw that I had got 14.6 mpg on that trip. Then the real surprise, I reset the trip meter, and drove from the UT/NV border where the paved road started again, to St. George, UT, which was 63 miles. Speeds were again 55 to 65 mph, and elevation dropped from 5800 feet to 2900 feet. There was only one small mountain pass to cross, but otherwise generally a downhill trip. When I pulled up to the stop light at St. George boulevard my trip meter said I had got 21.3 mpg! Wow! So this MDS thing helps, if you're able to just loaf along at slow speed, downhill most of the way, and not work the engine, it stays engaged, and a "4 cylinder" Power Wagon can get some surprising fuel mileage.

There are two trip meters on my truck. One is reset frequently, and the other has never been reset. Overall fuel mileage for the first 2000 miles of use, which included 641 miles of trailer towing, and driving it to work everyday when it isn't on a trip, is 13.7 mpg. I'm "ok" with that.

The trip meter is NOT accurate AT ALL!!! If you really want to get the milage for your PW then fill it up and reset the trip meter. The next thing you need to do is drive. Once you get to the point you need to fill up again, fill up and divide the number of gallons pumped down to the tenth or hundredth, which ever is the one they track it by, by the milage driven on the trip meter. I've been getting 10.5-11 city and 12.25-14.2 hwy and that's driving normally 35-45 city mph 70-80 hwy mph. Good luck

I have been using the Fuelly app to track mileage. In my 2015 I am getting in the 14.X's on 2-lane, 55-65 mph highways. The truck's computer is a little generous with the mileage calculations. Mine is always about 0.5-1.5 mpg higher than actual.

Actually, I checked mine by hand on the first trip home from the dealership. Hand calculated mileage was 15.5 mpg, and the trip meter said 15.7 mpg. I checked it again by hand on the second trip that I got 15.5 mpg with. It was only a 60 mile trip, but I refueled again because I was leaving the highway at that point to spend the day exploring in the desert, and I wanted the tank full. I calculated 15.5 mpg, and the trip meter said 15.5 mpg. I have found the trip meter to be quite accurate in a number of stock vehicles, and it has usually been within a few tenths of the calculated mileage. If you change tires from stock, it isn't accurate. And if you fill the tank differently from one time to another, your calculation can be as inaccurate as the trip meter.

My fusion was constantly 1 mpg high on the evic no matter what, so it was easy to know what I was getting for mileage. My 13 ram 1500, 14 2500 and wife's 14 grand cherokee have all been wild inaccurate most of the time. I keep track of it on Fuelly how inaccurate it is but most of the time it is 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon high. The better the mileage though the more off it is.

I had a 2007 2wd Hemi with the mds, I averaged 16-18 but on a highway trip running right at 68 the mds would kick in and I could get 24-26 so it does work but the slightest incline or head wind and all 8 started firing. I'll stick my 2010 PW with no mds though. I can get hand calculated 16 on highway with 37's and a tuner and average high 13's daily.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.
