Variation in batches of Nitto TG MTs?

Post by Txpowerwagon » Sun Nov 22, 2015 8:18 pm

Kind of a dumb question but this set of 5 Nitto that I rotate all 5 every oil chg, only has slightly over 13k on them amd they ate wearing perfectly even but wearing fast... I don't thing this set of 5 will make 40K miles, amd my last 2 sets of Nitto (bought for my 2010) lasted 90-95 on first set and 100 on second 2500 Cummins with tread left (but got hard and stiff-- no pun there). Wondering if I got a bad batch, these 5 have sequential serial numbers????

I don't know if they changed the compound of the tires but I also noticed what looks to be faster wear on my second set (got them about a year ago) and they seem noisier as well.

I love the tire however I will probable go to a more aggressive AT tire next and go to 35's, just need to find a square shoulder tire cause the nittos fit the truck perfectly.

My girlfriend had the same issue with a set of Toyo M/T's on her 07 2500 cummins. They made it to roughly 35k miles. She called discount tire, and told them, they told her that since she has a diesel there was nothing they could do, but Toyo did send out a memo about a bad batch. She drives 98% highway, and the last set of toyos went to 60k miles. Irritating to say the least, with that kind of money spent.

I only got 15K on my set - 4K from the original owner, and 11K of my use. At that point they were way below 50% tread depth, and had a hard left pull.
I'm just along for the ride...

I used to work for Goodyear. I can tell you this. The same tires made in different plants have a slightly different chemistry make-up. And also from lot to lot have a slightly different chemistry. Now dealing with tires from asia. All bets are off. No telling what witches brew they use. If the tires come from china. Look out! It's possible it get a clone of a clone. Japanese made tires are pretty good.

Toyo (Nitto) will not get my business anymore. 2 sets of at2 extremes wore out in 10k and 20k. They warrantied the first set but wouldn't the second. They said my roads must be too "rough". No joke. Not worth the 2 grand it cost me for a set. Wife's jeep had a set of Nitto terra grapplers. Lasted 40k miles. Trucks been running hankooks and after 55k miles there was still 7/32 left.

Nitto recently changed the Trail Grapplers to G2 or something like that. They look similar to the old TGs, but it is a different tire, at least in the ATs.

Edit: I'm probably thinking about the Terra Grappler rather than the Trail Grappler.

I am currently looking at the AT2 extremes and Copper ST Maxx. I really wanted the try the STmaxx when I had dry rot issues with the original set of trail grapplers, but could not get them so I went with TG's again thinking I got a bad set....of what little did I know lol.

I will admit, I am also interested in the new Copper STT Pro's, they look promising.

I had the Cooper STT's when I first went to a 35" tire. Liked them alot. Good traction. Got about 32,000 miles out of them.

I'm also thinking of getting the STT Pros in a 37 when I plan on upgrading sometime early next year.
