I guess I'm confused about your disappointment. AEV claims for the Hemi it's a true snorkel, so I'm not sure what all you were hoping for. I'm mechanically challenged, so maybe you can explain the benefit of a system that replaces the factory throttle body.
I think it is more about the price for what you get. You are paying for a couple pieces of plastic tubing to attach to your factory system. He was hoping for it to replace the factory airbox and intake tube as well for the price.

Yes, I was hoping for a new filter box and smooth, bigger main tube to help the airflow some. I was thinking about the S&B intake and then AEV released the snorkel, if the AEV would fit the S&B filter box like the factory box, that would be nice. But then you'd have $800 in the total system. I just think the AEV snorkel is over priced, the Airflow is not cheap neither if the exterior tubing is all you get but it's $100 cheaper than the AEV. Too bad Airflow doesn't have a 4th gen snorkel.

I have looked at other snorkels since my first reaction and see they pretty much all hook to the factory filter box so...I guess one could get some tubing and make their own main tube from the box to the throttle body if wanted.

Yeah, it's pricey. $600+ the install cost, anyone have an idea what AEV would charge for that? My plan was to have it done this past weekend by AEV Michigan, but they said the R&D shop hadn't released them to the field yet for the gassers. Will have to wait till next trip.

I understand it's about a 4 hour install, so depending on the shop rate, it could be close to $400 for the install.

I have never seen one that is throttle body on out. Coming to the factory air box is pretty much the standard. I am hoping to give one a whirl when the wife will allow.

Snorkels seem expensive on the face of it. However, we don't have the software to run the flow dynamics modeling to ensure the intake and throttle body are getting what they need without extra turbulence. I am assuming that AEV and other manufacturers have invested the time and $$$ to do that. It makes a massive difference in the efficiency and performance of the motor. Just look at what a port and polish job means for an old school V8. Now add computers, sensors, etc. I am sure you would need to optimize the performance of the raised intake to work with all of that stuff. That adds up to $$$ on the front end to produce that plastic tube that we are all dying to bolt to our trucks.

On performance loss with 37s- I have had 37s for about 2 years now, the tire size really doesn't have as much effect as what one would think. Acceleration is still more than adequate. (though I still wouldn't mind more power but, that's ALWAYS true! (no matter what vehicle I've owned)) Braking is not too badly effected even, IMO. I will say though, when I drove a built Mini Cooper with racing brakes on it for an hour and then drove my truck, I about ended up in the middle of an intersection, LMAO!!! But really, for a 7000+lb truck with 37s, acceleration and braking are phenomenal!!!!! The only time I really felt a lack of power was when towing 7000+lbs, the 5.7L didn't seem super happy. (but, I doubt it would have been much happier with the stock size tires)

From the AEV Forum the other day- the AEV Bumper needs a skid plate pretty bad.

Currently AEV doesn't have a skid plate on the bumper, but it's in the works. It really leave the inter cooler on the diesel vulnerable. I'm worried about the lack of protection for the smart bar with the current design. We'll see how the future bumper looks (there is rumor of different bar designs too).

i'ld still like to see an AEV diesel with AEV's suspension with 35" tires and chains. See if it all fits. from what i read on AEV the guys 37" tires rubbed on a full turn.

I recently ordered a 2016 PW. The truck will primarily be used more for long weekend east coast camping and travel, and as my DD. Since most of the camping requires a traversing a fair amount of fire roads, I have been considering the AEV RAI w/ Prefilter.

Looking at the AEV website though, I cannot help but come to the conclusion it is alot of marketing hype with little substantive value. For example, the website makes the following claims,
- Huge 5” inlet for maximum air flow
- Raises air intake for a cleaner, colder air charge
Maybe I am being cynical, but AEV certainly has the means to measure the airflow and temperature difference (aircraft companies have been doing it for 70 years) between stock and the two (2) configurations of RAI they are selling. So why don't they give us more quantitative information? Instead, we get meaningless marketing banter.

Does anyone have real world experience on the value of these products or is it simply just a $625 aesthetic addition?

Regards,
shacke

It's traffic jam abilities aren't that great still unless there's an abandoned car trailer that's tail down and waiting approx 200ft infront of you
