Rock Sliders are built

Post by Mike-H » Sat Aug 29, 2015 8:07 pm

For the last few weekends I've been working on a set of rock sliders for the PW. I found an EZ-Bend tubing bender in Craigslist. It was a great deal and I've had another project in mind already. The toughest part was getting the bends to match from side to side. I used 2x2x¼" for the main rail and a 1¾ x .120 for the rub rail. I put a coat of semi flat black and then a coat of GraviTex gravel guard to fight rock chips and give me something to step on. So far I'm happy with them. After they dry I'll have to invite some friends over to help me mount them to the truck. They are heavy. I'll post more pics when I get them on the truck.

they look good. Back when i was building sliders for Land Rovers, I draw a perfect rectangle on the concrete shop floor using a corner where the relief cuts were made. Then I could fit tubing in the rectangle to make sure it was a perfect match to the other side. It made it a lot easier to just cut off excess that was hanging outside of the rectangle.

My problem was lack of experience with the bender. Took me a bit to figure out where to set the tube to get my bend to end up where I wanted it to be.

Thanks for the compliments. Got the sliders mounted today. They turned out great. Although I made mount strength a priority and forgot about the depth of the coolers in the rear floor. I'll have to make some shorter versions to work with the sliders. No a huge deal since I really don't use the space, but it's nice to have. Add another project to the list.
Edit: I'll make another mount and move that one out of the way of the boxes. After thinking about it, I think that's the easier fix

Those look good. My only change if I were making some would make them wider the whole length of the slider. I would make the whole round bars stick out as far as the end part that kicks out. Not sure how much it would effect the strength overall but I think it may be beneficial for when squeezing through a tight spot between two trees. I think it could save some body damage....maybe. But awesome looking work

Mike-H, you did an amazing job.

Heck, I paid a shop to do mine and weld them on for me. So, much respect for you sir!

Here are mine, which look similar to yours:
