Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
I have a 2011 2500 Laramie Longhorn that i occasionally haul a boat and slide in pickup camper. The boat and trailer weigh 3500 lbs and the camper weighs about 1900 lbs. I don't haul them often 3-5 times per year and wanted to get feedback from others that have tried a slide in camper. I found some air bags that will articulate, so I am thinking that I will be good there. The dodge towing guide says that a slide in camper application is not recommended for this model. Am I making a mistake. I really want all the other off road capabilities it has and it just looks awesome. Also wondering about some of the options. It turns out you can't get the high mounted cargo cam with the convenience package (rain sensitive wipers and auto high beam turn off) not a big deal as the cargo camera is way more important to me. I am also thinking about clearance lamps, but haven't made up my mind. I think I want the dual alternators, even though it is probably overkill. Does anyone for see problems with that if I want to add mods down the road?
Also, I am curious what new features the 2016's will have. I would like to see blind spot monitor, adaptive cruise control and front parking camera and lane departure warning. Are those ever going to be a feature on the 2500's? I am actually looking forward to going to gas. I don't haul stuff often and think I can deal with the lower torque and hopefully get some gains there with mods.
What do you guys think? Anything else I should keep in mind when selecting a dealer for the order?

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
Get the options that you want from the factory - it is usually much harder and more expensive to add them after the fact. The marker lights are an inexpensive factory add and they add a lot of class to the appearance. I thought the dual alternators were probably overkill for my truck use so I stayed with single. However, if you even think you might add airbags and a compressor down the line, you will want the dual alternators.
Most of the time, people don't regret getting all of the bells and whistles on a vehicle after the fact - if they don't need them, then they simply don't use them. But if they need an option that they don't have, then they are SOL.

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
The truck has single rate coils so that's why ram says a slide in camper isn't recommended. Just put in some air bags. Solved! They aren't hard to remove if you still need maximum flex from the suspension. There are after market cameras. Some guys have put in a jumper harness and software to run a front, rear and cargo camera whenever they like! It ties into the 8.4u connect system. If I was on the ball I should have ordered the cargo camera. Then moved it to the front myself and just put in the regular third brake light. extending the harness would have been simple.
Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
Its still a truck. I'm sure they say it's not ideal also due to the fact it is slightly taller and the springs. With the low weights you stated it will tow that load easily. Its still a truck, and is designed to be used that way. Just has some goodies. Is it the most "ideal" truck they make for a slide in camper? Probably not. Will it do what you need it to? Bet yer ass, and take you places your other truck wouldn't. I love mine and use it as such, daily driver, tow vehicle regularly and the weekend wheeler/expedition vehicle. Mine is leveled without airbags and with heavier loads it tends to be a little nose high but nothing I cant handle or feel unsafe about. I don't think you will regret it one bit.

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
They also say not to mount a snow plow on a PW. Not because it will harm the truck in some mysterious way, but because of interference with a few hard parts under the front where plow brackets would be. Work around that and the plow is fine. Work around the weight of the camper with bags or springs and it will be fine.

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
Thanks for the comments. The Power Wagon came in and I picked it up today. From what I understand the 2016's won't be much different, no new features that would have made a difference to me. I had to come right back to work, so I have only driven it two miles so far:(

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
I got the Laramie Power Wagon. It came pretty loaded, but I also got the Cargo Camera, Dual Alternators, Adjustable Pedals, Nav, Keyless start, Cowboy Lights. The only thing I didn't get was the Ram Box. I will get some interior pics up. I have some questions about 35 inch tires and wheels, but am going to search the forum before posting a new topic about it. Just trying to figure out what wheel specs I need to have to get 35 inch tires to fit.
Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
where did you hear about what improvements, if any, regarding the upcoming 2016 models?

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
Things stalled at the dealer a little, so I went to another and they mentioned I could only order a 2016 at this point. The dealer mentioned that he didn't know of any significant improvements on the 2016 model yet. If there were going to be any minor improvements, they would not be available in the early 2016 models, but he could not imagine what they would be. He did not believe that some of the comfort features like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, 360 view camera, 4G cellular would be available in 2016 though.

Re: Thinking About Ordering a New Power Wagon
I'm running 35" tires on the stock wheels, no rubbing, no issues. Also tow my jeep regularly, again, other than the awful mileage when I tow, no problems.
