Info needed for 2012 wagon

Post by altaguy » Mon Jun 08, 2015 8:36 pm

Hey guys,

I am planning on putting a lift in my powerwagon this summer and need a little info.

I was going to get a Thuren 6" lift and talked to him about it and it sounded pretty good but now I am thinking of getting a fifth wheel. Will that lift be too high for the fifth wheel?

What about his 3" lift? I never talked to him about it but would that only level out my truck?

As for tires, I would like to go 37's but I don't want to do any cutting and would still like articulation without rubbing. Would 35's be better?

If the 6" lift will still work with a fifth wheel, would 35's look too small with that lift?

I have an iron cross front bumper and just ordered bushwacker pocket style flares.

I am thinking that for the fifth wheel I will have to just get his 3" lift and 35's but still not sure about rubbing at full articulation.

I'd stick to the 3" and 35s if doing a fifth wheel.

I could barely fit a 5th wheel under my 3G w/ 35's... I would vote no lift for towing one.. Not enough bed clearance unless you're planning on lifting the 5er as well.. If you think about it being 2-3" higher than a standard 2500 starting out you're already lifted. ;)

Depending on how the trailer is set up, doing a spring over conversion is really easy if it's a spring under. Did that with my car trailer and gained about 4" of lift

I also looked at lifting the 5th wheel but didn't like the idea of voided frame warranty and handling concerns... I have towed several GN trailers but they always had to be nose high to maintain rail clearances...

Thanks for the info guys.

I will do a spring over on the fifth wheel if needed. I just sent another email to Don about his 3" coils and what kind of lift they will give. I think they will just level the truck out so running airbags in the back should work good with a fifth wheel.

Does anyone know how 35's work on the 2012? I have heard too many stories on they fit fine no rubbing to having to trim a bit to not all years of gen 4 wagons have the same wheelwell opening. I just want to know if the 35's will allow full articulation and turning without rubbing without having to trim. I will be installing Thuren control arms, and as I said I have an iron cross winch bumper so I don't need to worry about front bumper issues.

On a side note... my bushwacker pocket flares came in yesterday! Now to find time to install them with the dual exhaust and onboard air sitting in my basement :(

With Thuren control arms you shouldn't have any rubbing with 35" tires on a 2012. I say shouldn't because you might have just a little bit of rubbing on the fender well plastic but nothing a little trimming can't fix.

I'm rocking 35's and rub a little bit on stock arms, but that doesn't bother me.

With Thuren arms you can run up to a 37, will? I think has them on his old goat, 37's look so bad ass under a stock wagon it's ridiculous.

Everything I've seen says 35's rub on stock control arms, but with Thurens they do not. I wanted a bigger tire than stock but I was not sure I wanted to spend a ton of cash on control arms or a lift so I went with 285/75/17 Toyo A/T II tires for my truck. I'm really happy with my choice, and for you and your 5th wheel it might not be a bad alternative.

I was originally planning on 37's and Thurens 6" springs and such but after deciding on the fifth wheel I think the 37's would drop my gear ratio a bit too much.

I see that Will is running 37's stock on his 2010 but I read somewhere that the 2010 (and 2011?) have larger wheelwells than the 2012.

I think I'll be getting the 35's for sure then. Cutting plastic is no big deal. I just didn't want to cut sheet metal. Thanks for the help!!

2010-2013 should all have same wheel wells. Go with Thuren high clearance arms and run an aggressive all terrain. Close to stock back spacing also will ensure you won't rub while flexing. 37's barelly rub the swaybar with high clearance arms. If you do a set up from don I suggest high clearance arms-3" soft coils- shocks to match- adjustable track bar- and adjustable rear shackles (to ensure you'll get a nice level stance) you won't need to worry about mini packs and what not if your running a 35" tire as they clear rear fender wells fine... I would recommend if your doing the lift and going through the trouble mine aswell do stainless steel brake lines also. Will really help control the stopping of that fifth wheel and helps pedal feel immensely... For 200$ you can't really go wrong.

That's close to what Don had said. I will be getting his 3" coils, high clearance arms, the rear shackles, standard airbags, Daystar cradles and he said the overland shocks would be great.

I will definitely get the stainless brake lines and the track bar.

I think somewhere on here someone says the p.wagon track bar is alittle longer then a regular 2500 but I would get one to be sure not to mention it really tightens steering up. A lot. And way tougher. You ever hit the ditch you won't bend dons track bar that's for sure. The stainless lines give alit more clamp on the rotor I've found after you really get on the pedal. Before it was mushier untill the floor now it gets much firmer much faster and you can feel the brake application better. Still not a Ferrari but is closer to one lol
