Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
Fine gents, I'm putting in an order for a 2016 PW laramie within the next week or so. Some things I know I want, other things I'm not sure of. Mainly I'm making this post to request the specifics that I don't know that I should want or not want. In short, help me avoid making serious mistakes on this large purchase.
Going with the laramie trim package to get the leather and memory seats. Obviously I'll be doing nav and backup camera along with that. I plan to get ram boxes too, as that extra storage is just too neat. Any special options you guys think I should get or avoid from the factory?
Tires: Planning to get Kumo road venture MT 35/12.50/20's. I've run them on some half ton trucks, but never 3/4 ton. They are nice and quiet but dig hard in the mud and handle great in the snow/ice. I love the nitto mud grapplers, but just can't take the noise on the hiway.
Wheels: Motometal 961 20x10 -24 offset.
Suspension: Carli ... and that's as much as I've decided on. I don't know what "kit" to get or whether carli's ready for 2016's. Basically, I want something that will let me clear 35's at full compression, without rubbing... and be able to take a beating. I fully expect to be able to "jump" small approaches and not smash parts off the truck.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
The big change I'd make to that list is the 20" wheels. The factory 17" wheels are about as good as wheels are going to get, and I like the idea of more sidewall on a 17" rim. If you were thinking of a wheel change you may want to look into AEV wheels, they have a couple of nice options.
AEV Ram Truck Parts: http://www.aev-conversions.com/vehicles/ram
I can't help you on suspensions as I'm still stock, but Carli has a fantastic reputation.

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
- To my knowledge, Carli or Thuren have not come out with anything for the latest Gen PW's (14+).
- I WOULD NOT GET 20" Wheels--if you want a mall-crawler, pavement princess, or a "zombie" stopper, then it doesn't matter, but if you actually want a practical, functional, go anywhere truck, stick with 17's; the engineers picked that size for a reason--think torque. The PW factory wheel is about as good as you'll find anywhere. There's an internal lip (some call it a bead, not a true beadlock) that keeps the tires from popping off the bead at really low pressures. Some folks on here out West will tell you they run 20psi and lower on the stock rims and mash hard rock crawling with no issues. Be careful here on what you're giving up if you dump the stock wheels. AEV makes a Salata I and II wheel for the PW, they look "OK" I guess--they have the recessed & protected valve stem, but I can't find anywhere if they have the additional bead lock protection the stock have--if not, they're not that nice to lose functionality for me.
-The 14+ do not have traditional lower control arms like the older versions of the PW have, which folks routinely change out here for angled/bent/high-clearance Carli or Thuren to clear 35-37" tires. The newer PW's have lower radius arms, which are different, and there are a few 14-15 PWs here running true 315xxx 35" tires w/o any issues.
- Options: I ordered everything but the sunroof, the bed mounted camera, and ram boxes, and you have to choose between the 9 speaker, rear amp, surround sound, premium Alpine sound system OR the factory upfitter switches. I figured I would use the entertainment system everyday, and the upfitter's occasionally. If I did it again, I still would NOT order the sunroof, I'm on the fence w/the Ram Boxes, and I WOULD get the upfitter switches, and NOT the premium stereo.
Best of Luck,
Dr. D

Keep in mind with more options comes less payload. I looked at a 2015 Laramie pw, loaded to the nuts and its payload was 1000lbs!
2012 PW Laramie. Magnaflow 18", Aries spidermat floor mats, extang solid fold, thule aluminum racks, factor 55 flatlink, 2 18w 3x3 led cubes, monroe shocks.
Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
Well, thats an easy fix. Order the reg 2500 coil springs if you want to carry a load & not be sagging. Coil springs are relatively cheap. If they don't fit, i am sure someone will be coming out with some soon, like BDS.
I put these on mine. Easy fix. $380 to my door. http://www.jegs.com/i/Hellwig/207/3510/ ... HwodFVEAvg
Seems the prices have actually come down. Only for older PW's though.

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
Dual alts and no 20s is what I'd change. I love my rear camera especially hooking up trailers. I wish I had ram boxes.
I'm running the same tires you're thinking of. They seem a bit soft and "wobbly" for a 3/4 tonner but I've never ran tires that big on anything besides jeeps so it may just be normal. I had a cupping problem but think it was improper balancing from installers. They killed it in Moab tho and grab good on wet and slick pavement and don't howl so they are a good choice.
As for the upfitter switches mentioned are you referring to the aux switches in the lower part of dash? I wasn't aware those were available as an option in the 2500/3500s. Sweet if they are now but that'd be a hard choice to decide between heated seats or 4 aux buttons.

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
I like the duall alternator idea!
Factory rims are good!
Well for me I like the big display screen for navigation, backup camera ect. Also we love the drop down DVD player!!!!!!!! Wife and I have lots of dinner and movie in the rig.
Really like the cloth seats too! Mine gets hammered with sand and salt water and cleans up well.
On the fence with ram box. I like the idea for things like trout gear and free diving equipment. But,...I like the width for things over 6 5 in length. 8 foot salt water rods barely fit. And kayaks are 10 and 12 ft so that diagonal thing for me is often being tested.
Also, and desire for any cap ( caravan, best top , callen , leer, four wheel pop up)......) or rack system will be a tricky fit.
Just rambling. No worries anyway! It's a 2016 power wagon!!!!!

Love my 14 slt! Love the rambox and vinyl floor. Wish I got the cargo camera. I could have moved it to the grill for a little help crawling. And not having a cassette player still upsets me.

The heated seats can be operated by the touch/navigation screen, so they are installed with the aux. switches (I dont think you can even order a laramie without the heated leather seats).jeep_boy02 wrote:... Really though? Do you still use cassettes? Hell, CD's are now becoming extinct!
Oh, that brings up a good point. If you use CD's, make sure you order it with the CD player. It is an option, not standard equipment anymore!

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
Oh and congrats on getting ready to order a new PW. Very exciting. I cant wait till I am in that same boat! Have they changed anything to your knowledge, compared to the 14/15's? Did they get that new grill and tailgate badging?
So far everyone seems to have shot your idea down on the 20's. I agree... I wouldn't put them on my power wagon either. It's not my cup of tea. But to each their own. With 35's, you will still have darn near the same sidewall height as the stock wheels and tires have, so...
The upper end 2500/3500's come factory with 20's. It is probably better overall for towing and on road, but for off road I agree 20's are too much unless you are running 40's or bigger.

This is the grill and badging on the tailgate I was referring to, but I think it may be just the new Limited package... not necessarily a 2016 thing...

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
Gonna jump in here, don't do 20", don't do 20", don't do 20"!! You'll lose the sweet ride it has!! Stick to a 17", or at most an 18", as long as you go 35" tire minimum. 20" wheels belong on an SRT car or jeep (I know, I have one, and the handling is great, and the ride is crap), you're buying an awesome truck, built to work and play, and will compromise everything about it by going to 20" wheels. From what I've done and checked, on my '15, I honestly think a guy could throw a 37" tire on, with no changes. The only reason I haven't, and believe me, mine are sitting in the garage, tempting me, is how awful my mileage was while towing, even on 35" tires. Plans for the future will probably invoke 4.56, or 4.88 gearing so I can run a 37" tire and still have power. As for the rest, I love my sunroof, I almost wish I'd gone ramboxes, and don't regret a thing about my '15. Power to spare, and rides better than my 300c SRT-8!!

Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
I'm wanting to put 20s and 35s on mine just for the sweet look, but the more I think about it the more I think I'm going to go with 18s and 35s to keep it capable off road but still look good. I would also recommend going with a -12 offset and a 9" rim at the most, a 10" rim and -24 offset probably won't fit in the wheel well with a 12.50 or 13.50 tire when flexing it off road. And that's just pointless to do that to a truck that's built for off road.

[quote=Stock 2500 coils are shorter and will eliminate any articulation you will get outside of the rear axle.[/quote]
do you how much shorter stock 2500 coils are than PW? Carli has a "lift" spring for the 2500 that is 1" longer than stock and slightly softer than stock 2500. im thinking it might be perfect for PW owners who need more cargo capacity if the length ends up being about the same and it will not be as stiff as a stock 2500. but i cant actually find confirmation anywhere
I am in the same boat, im almost ready to order, but still having a hard time deciding power wagon or 2500 since i have light slide in camper (1300lb dry). me, heated seats, sunroof, etc are the goodies. if i get a 2500 it will probably be AEV'd out, but never a PW. tough decision for me

I am in the same boat, im almost ready to order, but still having a hard time deciding power wagon or 2500 since i have light slide in camper (1300lb dry). me, heated seats, sunroof, etc are the goodies. if i get a 2500 it will probably be AEV'd out, but never a PW. tough decision for me
Re: Ordering a 2016 PW... any and all help.
It doesn't really matter what springs are installed. DOT and police go by the stickers on the door jam.
