Coated the lower quarters

Post by TrueCowboy426 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 8:11 pm

After wheeling last weekend I had to finally break down and undercoat my lower quarter panels. They guys that where with me at Rausch know how I didn't want to tear up the body, but I reached the point when I was out this weekend with a buddy that pretty much anything went. Only got the PW stuck once that I had to winch out of, but it spent a good amount of time dragging a Cherokee around. We were on some pretty knarly ATV trails (sorry no pics) so the truck got scratched up pretty darn good, and the rockers got the worst of it right down to the primer in more spots than I wanted. Spent today washing the truck (3hrs) and them spend a couple hours painting the rockers. Don't know if I like it yet, but too late now.

Short vid of the Jeep on one of the super easy trails. Don't be fooled by how tame it looks, farther on the trail is a hole that has claimed my truck twice on prior runs. Last time I thought we would need a backhoe to get me out as the winch almost didn't have the power to pull me up and out.

The best money I've spent on my 04 and my 2012 was doing the rockers in Line-X. The black on the rockers on almost every color truck looks good.

Old pic, but it still looks the same. Maybe slightly lighter in color.

I was gonna do my lower black section with smooth durabak also. How do you guys make a clean edge on the stuff? How easy is it to apply and such? I've only found it in the states while researching it online and haven't seen it myself. What prep do you do? Scotchbrite? Thanks

I used blue painters tape....and a 3m scratch pad...then I cleaned with prep all spray to remove any grease etc....and used the durabak roller to apply...I painted the plastic wheel flares, lower quarters, rear bumber top ....make sure to buy uv rated..doesn't fade

Do you put on a coat, then take the tape off right away, and then retapefor the next coat? Sounds like a couple coats usually does it?

I put 1 coat,on whole truck had sit for a few minutes, then a 2nd, again let it set for a few minutes and I removed the tape...you also can thin out the durabak with thinner if needed....they have multiple colors..

Been off the forum for awhile! Finally had the bottom of the truck, the flares and the box done with boxliner. I would have preferred line x, but the local guy does rhino lining. My only issue with the rhino is that I've heard it fades over time. Kinda hard to see the black in the pics.

I'm going to price out the rockers and wheel liner at Line-x near my house and up in Michigan near my folks house. If the quote comes out ridiculous high, I'll do it my self. Question, anyone have opinions, experience, know the substantive difference between:

1. Hurculiner
2. Durabak
3. Monstaliner
4. Duplicolor
5. Raptor Liner

Monstaliner is a sponsor on the jeep forum and almost every person who has put it on their jeeps love it. As far as I know it is the only diy out there that comes with a warranty. I could do the bed and front and rear bumpers and rockers of my truck for less than it would cost me to get just my bed line-x'ed up here. I prefer the matte texture and look of the line-x but not for the price they want for it.

Thanks Jeep!! I'll look into that Monstalinee, though a lot of PW guys have used the duplicolor & durabak...decisions!!

Hopefully the quote from Line-x won't be crushing, cause I hate sanding, taping, & painting, but from reading I've done, I've seen prices north of $1200 for rockers on other truck forums, yikes. My threshold is around $500 before I'll do it myself.

My local Line X quoted me $1650 to do my rockers/ bottoms of the doors. I didn't even know what to say, I just went silent and then he said, "but that's just a quote, I may be able to do if for less after I look at it" lol, yea right.

I believe I paid 1450 (canadian) tax in, for the guy to do the box liner, lower part of the truck and the fender flares. I thought it was a bit high, but I'm glad I didn't have to do the prep work and have that mess in my garage, haha. The guy did a good job, the coating kind of wraps around the door edges and underneath a bit, so hopefully it won't peel off too easily.
