Cooper ST Maxx

Post by MOPARManiac » Sat Apr 04, 2015 10:55 pm

I ordered a set last night, and I'll do a review when I get them on. I have had Hankooks for the last three years. No complaints with the MT's, but they are close to being worn out. I have a set of the Dynapro AT's and they just won't do it for the Powerwagon. I like the look of the ST Maxx and I like that they are a cross between an AT and MT tire. The reviews are good and if they are quieter on Hwy than MT's with an MT performance off road I'll be a happy camper.

Thats the size I was looking at too. Do you have a lift of any sort? Also I noticed that you have an 11 JUKR and an 11 PW. Nice, we have a 10 JKUR and a 12 PW. My plans are to put the PW stock BFG 285-70R17s on the JKUR and get bigger shoes for the PW. Kills two birds with one stone. Bigger tires on both. My PW tires only have 16000 miles on them. Post some pics when they're on.

My power wagon is stock with the exception of thuren control arms which are supposed to be good up to 37's. I'm going to mount the spare 1st and see if there's any issue with it in the stock location. If it doesn't fit I'm going to consider 37's. As for the the JK... Looks like it's going to be sold to a friend in a couple weeks. A FWC camper is my next mod :)

I just stuffed my 315/70/17 spare in the stock location. I had to bend the heat shield a bit and unclip the wire harness from the frame and and tie it off with zap straps closer to the floor. Very snug fit, had to kick it a few times to settle it into its place.

How do the the 315's fit under your rig? Do you have a lift of any type? Pics please if you can.

No pictures. Simply pull 2 wire harness plugs out of the drivers side frame rail at the back, and push the harness up and zap strap it into place (secure it to cross bar with a hole through it). The heat shield for the exhaust will need to be pushed a bit towards the exhaust. As you raise the tire into place, give it a few kicks so as to settle it into its new home. It's tight but it fit inflated. I have the duratracks so the size might be slightly different.

Well, I got the Cooper's on today. It has been quite the adventure to say the least. Last week I changed out the Dynapro MT's with the Dynapro AT's I bought new for my old pickup. I only put a couple thousand miles on them when I traded in my old 1500 for the PW, so when I traded I kept the new AT's. A couple days after swapping them out we left town for Easter weekend. I immediately noticed that the steering wheel was shaking a lot and there was quite a bit of vibration. I said to my wife that the tires must not have been balanced properly and we would find a tire shop in the next town. I noticed that the more I sped up the smoother it became and at 80 it was smooth as silk. I drove on Interstate for a couple hours until I had to get off and head north. At 65 there was a lot of shaking so I wanted to get it fixed before driving on two lane roads. We stopped at an alignment/tire shop and they happened to have a road force tire tester. An hour later, $75 lighter I was told the right front tire was out of round and wouldn't balance properly. He gave me a print out and moved the tire on the wheel which helped some. I decided I was going to just sell the tires and get the Cooper's so that's what I did.

Yesterday after returning home I went and spoke to the tire shop where I purchased the Hankooks three years ago. I showed the printout showing the tire was out of round and it was offered I pay $17 bucks for their road hazard warranty they would replace the tire for free. I thought that if I got a new tire I could sell the set for more and recoup some of my costs so that's what I did. I later got to thinking that my dad needs a new set of tires for his pickup so I called him and he was interesting. I gave him a heck of a deal and told him Happy Fathers day early. Today the UPS man delivered the Coopers and right after that the tire store called and told me the Hankook was delivered as well. I went to the tire shop and they swapped out the out of round tire with the new one. They even let me keep the out of round one to use as a spare. Very nice of them and I'll continue to purchased my trailer tires from them as they offer a great price. I drove the PW home on the Interstate and everything was great, I had the Hankook mounted to make sure it was the tire before getting the tires to my dad. I then loaded up the Coopers and went to Discount to get them installed. They loaded up the Hankooks in the bed and I went home. I was unloading the Hankooks and got to the third tire and noticed that he sidewall had three big gouges taken out of it. I could tell where their tire machine did some significant damage. Off to Discount tire I went. I showed the manager the problem and he said he had a Dynapro AT in stock and would just give me a new tire. I thought that was fair since the damaged one only had a couple thousand miles on it. Off to home and now I have two brand new Hankook AT's and two with only a couple thousand miles and a spare to boot. I called my dad and informed him he was getting two new tires through the deal.

Now I have a brand new set of kickass Cooper S/T Maxx tires with the free replacement warranty. My dad will have a new/like new set of Hankook AT's. I would have kept the AT's, but I went off-roading over the weekend and they just won't do it for me. Not near aggressive enough, and I know I would not be happy in the long run. I do like them on the Hwy though, which will be the majority of the driving my dad does along with gravel roads so they'll work great.

Now the few miles I have driven with the Cooper's I am very happy. They have a very aggressive tread, and I am amazed at how quiet they are on pavement. Comparable to any AT tire and much quieter than MT's. They look good, just two small like all the factory PW tires. I debated on going up a size, but decided to stay stock. I will continue to add more, and I'll get some photos up as well.

I think you will be happy with them I have about 16,000 miles on mine so far and they still look like new. I have used them in 3 feet of snow aired down no problems and they have seen alot of rock use. They are just a great all purpose tire  I was up in the mountains last night with my buddy and the only time I had any issues was when I was trying to climb a VERY muddy hill... I was locked front and rear and just couldn't get to the top. Granted I really couldn't take it at speed because of the rocks in the damn way . To be fair for a hybrid tread tire they do pretty good in the mud even for not being a mud terrain. When these wear out I will be going up to the 315/70/R17 ST Maxx.

You should like them. Mine have about 30,000 miles on them and still have 7-8/32 tread left on them (except the one that the wore out quicker due to misalignment). I'll definitely be buying another set when the time comes.

It's a Luverne and was on my PW when I bought it along with the Luverne steps. The grille guard seems to be well made and is pretty stout. The steps on the other hand I do not like how these steps are designed and attach to the rocker panels. I am actually amazed that I haven't bent the steps up yet when off road, someday I am going to have some sliders. Here is a link to the website.

Good to hear, I am impressed with Cooper Discovery tires. We have some on our Durango and they are great as well, they are the Discovery all weather type. The other nice thing about the ST Maxx is they are so much cheaper than the comparable Good Years. I debated going up to 295/70R17, but decided to stay stock. I really wish Cooper would make these in the 75 series as that is what I wanted to put on. All the tires in the 75 series that are currently made do not appeal to me except the Toyo's and I couldn't come close to matching these in price.

It is a Soft Topper and they are made in Boulder, CO. I don't have it on to much, but our Dog is getting old and when we travel it provides him with some more comfort. I am impressed with the quality and how I can roll up the sides and back. I also like that it will fold down to the front of the box. The thing that I don't like is the poor visibility. The Gen 4 are big enough and the topper w/o side windows makes visibility crap. I also don't like having it on and it makes it a pain to get in and out of the bed of the pickup to get things out of the toolbox, etc. It does serve it's purpose well for what I bought it for.

Thanks for the info regarding the topper.
I like the idea of a soft folding shell/cap but the visibility and ventilation are things that I have wondered about regarding a top without windows.
It's all pie in the sky anyway,...(thuren, carli, tires, bumpers, white knuckle, lights....sure there is more i forgot!) this IS list you know
But some kind of multi use cap, rack, or camper is on deck. So, if looking to outfit your rig again would you buy one like this or look at some other options?
And i get that this should be tire here so thanks so much for sealing the deal for me on my next set of shoes.

They make a soft topper with racks on top to haul things like a cargo carrier, canoe, etc. If I had it to do over I would have went with that style. We want to get a canoe in a couple years and I'll have to buy some racks to haul it on the PW. I won't be able to use the topper then.
