Tire size - What's the skinny?

Post by RJL1 » Thu Apr 09, 2015 11:48 pm

I've literally been searching on and off for about a year and have ramped it up considerably lately since I'm gonna get new tires for the PW within the next month. I've narrowed it down, I think to some Cooper ST Maxx's. Now onto the size. I was set on some 315-70R17's but have read they rub horribly on a stock rig, which I have. Nothing added. Truthfully I don't want to add anything either, I really like how this big truck rides and I really dig the stock PW rims. Now onto my next two choices. Either a 285-75R17 or a 305-70R17. Both the same height with the 305 a bit wider. However, very limited in tire choice. 315's have a vast amount available. Do the 315's rub as bad as I've read? Any real world advise and pics available on a STOCK rig with STOCK rims?

Thanks

Bob

Thanks Deluca. I have that saved on my tool bar. I've used it so much I really think I'm wearing it out. LOL! I just want some input on what rubs and what doesn't on my 2012.

I just put on a set of 315 goodyear duratracs. On stock rims but I do have a 1.5" leveling kit on the front, only very slight rubbing on the upper control arms. Duratracs are extremely aggressive for technically an all terrain tire plus they belly out a bit due to the rim width being right at the very minimum recommended for that tire. Not sure if the lift makes it better or worse depending on where the angle of the control arm crosses the tire. It is not bad though, mine is a 2010

I've been going back and forth for a long time on what size tire to go with, and I finally decided about a half a month ago that I'm going to go with the Toyo Open Country A/T II in the 285/75's. I think the trick on the 4th Gen Power Wagon is to stick to a 11.50" wide tire and you should be able to avoid any kind of rubbing on the control arms. Everything I've seen on those of us with the "old" suspension shows that once you hit the 12.50" wide tire you're going to rub on the control arms at full lock.

Whats wrong with a lil bit of rubbing? It only happens at full lock and at slow speeds. Had some rubbing on my '01 Off-Road when I went to 315/70/17's but after a week it didn't bother me anymore. I say get the wider tires and have more choices and ignore the rubbing sound.

I have to avoid tire rubbing because I need to save room for tire chains. That might not be a concern for others.

Yeah a little tire rub on the control arms is pretty much harmless... until you throw a set of tire chains into the mix lol

If I was in a place like Texas I'd be running Thuren Arms and 37" tires and say to hell with a little bit of rubbing. However, when you're axel deep in snow and running chains, you need all the room you can get. There are times I envy those who live in sunny climates (especially in January when it's 10F, snowing, and the wind is blowing sideways at 30mph).

Well thats true I thought everyone had sunny weather all year round. You can remind me of the snow in when it is 105 during summer months. lol

I have 315/70/17's on my '14 and also did on my '11 PW before that. They did rub the control arms at full lock but I just got used to knowing how far to turn. Other than that I loved that tire size.

Thanks for the update. Stock truck with stock rims? Any pics? How bad was the rub? Obviously this is the size I want. I love the choices available and the size is just about perfect for our trucks.

Was a stock 2011 with stock rims. I don't have the pics on my phone anymore, I will see if I can dig some up. I would say the rub was "medium" bad. I didn't like it but could live with it.

RJL1, I ran 35x12.5 and they did rub the control arms on stock set up, I just knew how far to turn the wheel to keep them off of it 90% of the time. The width is the key factor. I only changed the control arms out with Thurens, no leveling kit (I think they are pointless, add any weight in the bed and it's front high) and there is plenty of room for a 35x12.5 with bent arms. I run 37x12.5 now with nothing more than the control arms and have slight rubbing on the sway bar at full turn. You can run a taller tire if you keep it on the narrow side. I wish they made a 37x10.5

Heck- If I could get a tire in a 35x11.50 I'd be thrilled! My best bet is the Toyo A/T II in a 34x11.50 if I want to stay away from different control arms.

You couldn't give me another set of BFG's after the way the stock BFG's have lasted and performed. Maybe they are a good tire for Jeep's, but I just don't think they are the best tire choice for a 3/4 truck.

Lots of opinions on them. I've run nothing but for years, and have the 315 on mine right now, couldn't be happier. I'm looking forward to trying the KO2's. But then again, I wouldn't run a toyo if it was given to me.
