05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Time to finally lift the 05 pw. Going to do the whole front steering up grade, track bar and either hopefully freespin or at very least hd unit bearings. My question is on my stock wheels. I have been running 35 bfg km2s forever now and except for small rub at full steer there have been zero issues. I am now wanting to go to 5 to 6 inch and a set of 40 x 13.50s. I already assume some/alot of trimming will be necessary and have zero issues with that but are the stock wheels backspacing bad enough to make this impractical with the new tire being 1 inch wider (1/2 per sid) than my current setup. Plus obviously concern of mounting a 13.50 on a 8" wheel is another worry. Will probably be goimg fiberglass on fenders and bedsides as well. Concern with wider and less offest wheel is increased contact with body/door when turning plus added stress/load on front end components. Looking toward Thuren, calri and dor for all options on lift and other components. The stock wheels are qulity pieces plus the saved money for another set of wheels can go toward the freespin. Was also curious on clearance of stock wheel when running the upgraded steering rod ends versus standard balljoint design. I do not do any hardcore flexing or crazy trails just alot of camping and work around property in woods. Deep snow driving during winter and occasional mud. Mainly sees alot of daily driving around town and some highway trips occasionally. Second thought would be to sell the stockers(seems like alot of guys looking for them) with the 35's and put that toward a set of hutchisons with some 40 mtrs. Thanks guys for all information and taking the time to read.

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Seems like what you use your truck for bead locks and 40's might be a little over kill. The difference in weight from your current set up is going to be pretty considerable. That being said would be a pretty slick set up...05PWrockcrawler is running something similar.
-A lot of places won't mount a 13.5" wide tire on a 8" wide wheel do to the minumum wheel width requirements set by the tire companies purely from a liability stand point. Additionally, say Thurens aftermarket heim and post style steering set up won't work with the backspace on the stock PW wheels. I would also highly highly recommend upgrading to a free spin kit especially if you go with aftermarket wheels that have less backspace hence adding more stress on the hubs. You'll definetly also want to upgrade your ball joints...the stockers will never hold up to the added weight.

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
So it sounds like you want to do similar to my truck. Ok I'm running mostly Thuren parts on my truck. But with fiberglass fenders and bed sides you should be fine with an average 6" lift. Thuren long arms are very expensive and you have to cut brackets and weld all new parts on pretty labor intensive. I'm also running the HUTCHINSONs with 40x13.50x17 MTR's. Tires only rub on my control arms a little when fully turned hard. Gunboat I do believe had stock steel wheels for a while with same size tires. I was gonna go DOR but Danny was having trouble getting stuff out in a timely manner back then and I couldn't wait. Problems are fixed now and he makes a reAlly nice heavy duty ADjustable long arm kit for our trucks plus he can put as much of a bend in them to help clear your tire and wheel combo. Nice to have adjustability to move axle forward to keep from rubbing. I had to cut the back of my fenders some to keep from rubbing under full flex but with fiberglass fenders you won't have this issue. I would go with the Thuren track bar and steering setup very nice been very happy with it so far everything has been on over a year. I'm running 6" Thuren diesel coils that flex great and ride good. I would just get the standard carli (Deaver makes them) 6" springs for rear and a Thuren adjustable shackles. I'm sure there is a ton of other questions or stuff I'm forgetting just ask I will try to help you out any way I can.

Great point on ball joints a must upgrade item I'm running Dynatracs and Yukon Free spin kit on mine. I think you would be happier with a nice new set of aluminum wheels. I love my HUTCHINSONs and wouldn't trade them for anything but remember you have to put new tires on yourself most people won't touch them. Not a big deal to me but something to think about. Here is a few pics plus I have a build thread on this site with every thing I did to mine on here.

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Actually with the type of wheeling and driving maybe a cheaper and still good option is a BDS 6" lift with carli rear springs (BDS ones are stiffer) and Thuren adjustable brackets with Thuren track bar steering components and upgraded shocks. That would give you the extra cash for ball joints, wheels, tires, free spin and maybe even new gear box upgrade etc. Gets expensive my truck has a ton of cash in it even though it looks like crap and is all beat up lol
Any questions again just ask!

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Thanks for all the info. Yeah I followed your build crawler and def enjoyed it. Sent ya a email awhile back but think I messed it up. From day one when these came out I have wanted to put 40's on one of these and make it a Dd and weekend player. Def wierd to be the catalog ordering guy this time around though. Had my own fab shop for a while and have built everything from crawlers to race cars and now into building hot rods from the ground up. Now my carrer for last couple years has me working 7 days aweeek doing 10 to 12s and have zero free time to do anything for myself. So I get to now be the noob and ask all the questions and get the info from guys tgat have already been there and done that. Feels kinda nice to just pick up the phone to order parts instead of ordering raw material. I really do appreciate all and any info given. I am also a firm believer in spending the money and doing it right the first time and not have to worry about it later. That being said I am also a realistic person and know that I dont need a full blown chase vehicle suspension. Was originally going to do the stomper look(for those of us old enough to remember what toy that was) and just do long arms and massage the body around the massive tires with little to know lift but after measuring and to do it right was going to take alot of time dealing with doors and relocating alot of other stuff. So that plan went to side when work has picked back up and when all u do all day is metal work the last thing u want to do is more once u get home. So back to the truck. My little boy likes the look of the lifted trucks anyways(like every kid) so better make him happy and make my work alot less. Have zero concern on the beadlocks and ran a set of trail readys on road and off for long time without and issue. My concern is balance with the any wheel and the 40 mtrs. Def concerned about highway travel and vibrations wjth tire wheel combo. Also since no crazy trails yet will just rock the 4:56s for now w stock shafts. Thuren seems to have quality stuff just wish he would update his sight. Def need to email him. Another concern is rear leaves a d holding weight. Wont do additional blocks so def want full replacement leaf or at very least add on. I do haul with this truck and occasionally pull a car trailer but nothing crazy. Seen the rear bag setups but would only want that as a reserve and not rely on it for the sightest load. The sane person would say just stay on the 35's but sanity is questionable. Thanks again
Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Beat up versus badges of honor. I perfer the second. No scratches or dents equals mall crawler or very very careful driver. I wear my badges honorably and get asked all ghe time about them and normally gets respect. Function over form first
Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
So what would be an ideal wheel backspacing and width for the 40x 13.50s. Was planning on the thuren steering so guess aftermarket wheel is going to be a necessity. Plus would look alittle weird with fiberglass fenders and bedsides with stock offset wheels and width. Btw are the mtrs holding up and how are the airsoft bb balance job working.

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
So far so good on MTR's and the airsoft BB's that I used to balance them. I'm running 14 oz of BB's and works pretty good. Have wheeled it at least a dozen long weekend hard wheeling trips with no issues and a bunch of day playing. drove from Texas to Moab with no problems and doing it again in two months. As a little vibration right now but nothing major. I have a track bar bushing with some play I need to fix and probably rotate the tires before MOAB.

Call Deaver and you can order leaves any way you wNt them with any load bearing. I wanted zero load bad idea they are crazy soft. So I put air bags with daystar cradles on it so no issues.

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
Awesome information. Glad to hear you are goimg back out to Moab. I would love to duplicate the trip some day. Has been a dream ever since we started crawling years ago. My little guy is old enoigh now to really enjoy it so hopefully within next couple years will be able to make that happen. Did you have any angle issues with front driveshaft and 6" lift? Thanks

Re: 05 LIFT W STOCK WHEELS
No I lengthened them just a little bit each cant remember exactly how much but ran them stock for a month or so before my Tom Woods came in then switched them out and lengthened the stock ones. Did fine I even wheeled it but front stretched pretty far out when flexed thought it would come apart lol. Yes and Moab is a must go on trip. my first time was last year and it was everything I thought it would be and then some. Expensive trip but well worth it. Glad my wife loves me so much that she's letting me go again this year. Miracles do happen lol
