My truck came with a cut off pipe and aftermarket muffler. The droning has to go....
Truck sounds great when your on the gas or in the powerband but if your lugging the motor in traffic or slow on the trail its pretty uncomfortable in the front seats and deafening for the back seat passengers. My guess is the prior owner smashed the exhaust pipe and just cut the damaged part off
Suggestions welcomed

You can always buy a new muffler (magnaflow 22") and have an exhaust shop put it and the rest on and dump it out the back instead the axle

My suggestion would be to leave the current muffler and have an exhaust shop simply extend the pipe on out the back of the axle like normal. The droning may be tolerable after that. It will be about your cheapest attempt.

Based on the location of the dump, I'm guessing that you are not hearing exhaust drone, but harmonics caused by the vibration of all that sheet metal above the tip. Muffler looks small, but if you run a new pipe out the back and still think it's too loud, just cut out this muffler and put in a bigger one. You need to run a new pipe anyway, so not much lost by trying the current muffler with a proper pipe.

Thanks guys, my plan was to ask a muffler shop but it's always better to get a little education before hand. Swapping the muffler for a longer one and extending the pipe will probably be the ticket

But if you like the sound of the exhaust now, no sense in chaging the muffler out yet. See how it sounds with it routed all the way out back first.

True, I just don't like doing things twice. Extending the pipe will probably be enough, I'll try and show some restraint!

Ha! Well, if you like the sound of the current muffler, I really don't see any reason to change it out. I suppose a quieter one may help more with droning a bit, but I dont know for sure.

Your resonator is missing. It's job is to trap sounds & bounce them at opposing frequencies to annihilate their sound signature.

Extending it out past the axle will be a huge help. I went through a few exhaust systems on my power wagon before I got it right. First was a Magnaflow 14 dumped after the axle. Ran this for a while but grew tired of the loudness, but drone was tolerable. Next was a Magnaflow 22 (or maybe 24, don't remember) that was dumped right after the muffler like yours. Sound was quieter but drone was terrible. Extended it out the back again past the axle like I had before and it was great. No drone at all.
I've got a similar issue now on the 1500. It's got a Magnaflow 22 or 24 that exits before the rear tire. It's not nearly as bad as being dumped after the muffler but still drones a bit.
So, moral of the story, take it past the axle if you don't want drone. Don't necessarily have to go all the way out past the tire though, I didn't.
