"On the fence"

Post by 06powerwagon06 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 3:46 pm

I'm really torn right now guys. My PW isn't my daily driver anymore and it just sits there until I actually need it (which isn't very often anymore). I'm toying with selling it. I need some sway either way from the winch mob to help me make up my mind. I trust all of you to give me honest opinions and advice to what you think I should do. OK let me have it guys and don't hold back! :box:

Do you need the $$$?

Do you NEED a PW when you do take it out?

Are you getting out of the 4x4 hobby?

Can you replace it with something else more economical that will do what you want it to?

Is it paid for?

If not, can you get something else for the same $$$?

Can you sell it in your area for a decent price, or will you have to advertise in another major area?

Can you live without knowing you have perhaps the best modern 3/4T truck ever built for off highway use?
I'm just along for the ride...

What he said... I can understand where you are coming from. I would pull out a pen and paper and draw out the pros and cons. If its close to/paid off, I would hesitate to get rid of it just because if its not costing anything/much to have around, than it can serve as a backup vehicle. I would also look to see how much :cash: you stand to make/loose if you do decide to get rid of it.

If it is paid for, and you can afford it------DON'T SELL IT!!!!!!!
I made this mistake with a motorcycle and snowmobile I had when I was in the same position as you.

I got rid of a 79 Jeep that I had over $25k worth of mods and upgrades in so that I could get my dream truck....my Power Wagon. It is unquestionably the most versatile and capable production truck available. I will keep it until the wheels fall off and she finally gives up the ghost. Hopefully that's many years down the road, as long as I take good care of it.

If you sell your Power Wagon....will you replace it with something that's just as good? Will it do all of the things you could do in your Power Wagon? Will you have just as much fun and be just as proud of it? Will you get to be part of a different forum of vehicle enthusiasts as cool as the :winchmob: ? If you can't answer yes to these questions, then you should keep your Power Wagon and be happy you get to wheel with a small fraternity of like-minded truck/off-road nuts. Lots of folks out there wish they had a Power Wagon, but don't or can't due to lack of finances or other reasons, and then they settle for second best....if you get some other rig, will you be happy with it and not miss being able to go just about anywhere and take just about anything with you? I'd say stay the course and keep your Power Wagon! :patriot:

Okay I'll start with Cactus Red...No don't need the money. No I don't need a PW when I take it out. I never really got into the 4x4 hobby other than the 2 wheeling trips with fellow members of the winch mob. As for replacing it...I have a ford focus that is my daily driver for fuel economy reasons. Yes it's paid for. I could most likely sell it around here no problem for a decent price. lol the thing that bothers me the most is I know I would kick myself if I ever got rid of it. I always said that I wouldn't get rid of it no matter what. I'm toying with just taking it off the road and tearing the engine apart.

Coder...I was just looking for a lifted 4x4 truck to help me out on my property when I get out there. I actually didn't know what I bought when I bought it. It wasn't until I found DT and PWR that I realixed what a hidden gem I found.

Throttle8(Dave)...It is paid for and I can afford it. What I'm saving in gas I could afford another car payment if I wanted lol  Every other vehicle I've ever owned and got rid of I'm kicking myself for doing it.

Kenny...I also had a CJ that I built from the frame up and miss that thing everytime I see one. I guess if I did sell it I would take the money and buy a tractor/loader. I would get way more use out of it then I would the PW by far. Mind you I don't NEED a tractor but it would be pretty handy to have one around when I need it. I'm sure I could find a tractor forum but it would never compare to you guys :winchmob: as I wipe a tear form my face :(

I'm still unsure at this point so keep em coming guys. Steer me in the right direction :notworthy:

I have regretted selling a few things in the past. Each time I try to replace something I miss, I end up buying something in worse shape, with more miles, and in need of WAY more $$$$$$. I once bought a motorcycle with 242 miles. It was a V twin cruiser. I ran it for a summer, then decided to get a sportbike.. I sold the cruiser, bought a few sportbikes, and eventually decided I missed the cruiser. I found one just like it, same color and size, and bought it. It had over 21,000 miles on the clock. I spent enough money on it over the years to try to keep it running that I could have made payments on a new one. Bad emotional decision.

If you can afford to keep it around, I would do it. Justify it by just calling it a pickup if you must. Everyone needs a pickup. Do something to preserve it ( Can I get a Fluid Film!!! AMEN!!). Clean it up real nice and know that it's there when you need it. And come to Rausch Creek with us once in a while to hang with the Mob. What other reason could you possibly need?

Just my two cents here, but reading this and all the comments from the guys and yourself, it is almost like you are trying to convince yourself to sell her!!! DO NOT make that mistake. You have a gas saver you use for your daily ride.

My PW "WAS" my daily driver until my wife past away last year. When she died, I started driving her Jeep GC as my DD. I also bought a Nissan 370Z Nismo last December as a X-mas present to myself. I also have 2 motorcycles. So I have 1 truck, 1 suv, 1 sports car, and 2 bikes. All paid for. Do I need all of this? No. If I was smart. I would have only one vehicle. Do I need a big truck? Not really. I could get away with using a small truck no problem. But I'm not getting rid of the PW ever. The PW is just one of those things that you HAVE to hang on to. Even with it's short comings, it's almost the perfect truck. How many people on DT that got rid of their PW's only to want them back. Alot of them have said that they wished that they never sold it.

Sounds to me like you had better just keep it. If I am to ever get rid of mine it will be for another one with less miles in a different color (still dreaming of that light khaki one I saw). I didn't claw my way to the top of the truck ladder to go back to the second best.

I've been toying around with selling mine as well. Conclusion...it has 80,000 on it, scratches everywhere, it clunks, has a manual (which sadly no one wants anymore) and has given me some headache's the last couple of years. I was looking at 2500 Cummins trucks/F250's. Realistically I'd at the most get 16-18K private party for mine if I sold it in the current condition it's in (mechanically in GREAT shape; I'm super anal about maintenance and this truck gets it a LOT) because of all the scratches/pinstripes/minor dents. I wanted (still want, actually) a diesel because I can make 600hp with one, tow 15,000 pounds and get 20mpg. I also do a fair amount of driving per year as the PW is my DD; I average 20-25K per year. However after I ran the numbers, the diesel didn't make sense for me right now. I would most likely have to make payments to get the ones I wanted (20-25K dollar range/less miles than the cheaper ones) and I would be buying a vehicle with an unknown maintenance history. I got my PW at a fairly low 23K miles and I know what stuff it's had done to it to keep it running as smooth as the day I got it. Just for starters: unit bearings @ 74K miles, water pump @ 74K miles, T-Steering @ 60K miles, ALL u-joints @ 74K miles, PS pump @ 30K miles, Steering Box @ 74K miles, brake pads/rotors @ 35K miles...list goes on. Point being I have dumped a lottt of $$$ into prepping this truck for the long haul. When I got it I told myself that I would run it to 150-200K and then look for a replacement pickup for everyday use. Today, that still is the current plan after running all the numbers. Mine (thankfully) is paid for, gets pretty decent mileage and is in great mechanical shape. When it gets up there in mileage I'll retire mine to strictly off-road useage and tow it with my new(er) Cummins :D

I know this isn't the same as your situation but I'd consider keeping it especially since it's paid off. Get one of those metal carport things and park the PW underneath to keep the sun off/weatherstripping/clearcoat/dashboard in good condition. Add some fuel stabilizer to the gas and park it until you need it. Maybe give it to your kid(s) (if you have any/planning to have any) one day.

Ya I might just park it in the corner of the shop and tinker with it. Who knows.......maybe next time you guys see it there will be a diesel under the hood. Now before you guys get on me about the weight of a diesel engine in our trucks, It would be a smaller mercedes engine that isn't as heavy. TwistedPW (Edwin) mentioned to me that one of the diesels will mate up with our tranny's. That sounded dirty didn't it! It's a little far fetched right now but you never know. I still can't see me getting rid of it. I think I'll park it in the shop and just put fire and theft insurance on it. Thanks for the inspiration guys!

I say if you can afford to keep it, keep it Kris. I should really deal my PW in for a diesel, but I just can't seem to let it go. I drive over 1000kms (600miles) a week, and haul quite frequently and this PW is killing me in the fuel I have to dump thru it. I keep hanging onto it as there is not very many of these trucks in our area (even less with the 6spd) and I like to have something exclusive and unique much like my old 87 W100. Put it in the back yard, and just use it as a toy to tinker with and upgrade when you have time and money.
2007 Dodge Power Wagon - Inferno Red Quad Cab, G56, KRC 210X cam, SRT8 JGC seats, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Offroad lights behind the grill, Warn wireless winch remote, Carli front Diff Guard, Carli Long Travel Air Bags, On board air complete w/ train horns, homemade hidden gooseneck hitch, Homemade locker bypass, upgraded Mopar steering box, Centerforce clutch

2002 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4x4 Quad Cab 4.7L Bright Silver, HO Cams, 12,000 lbs Winch mounted behind bumper, 4.56's, 2500 factory tow hooks, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Air-Lift Ride Control bags, homemade hidden ball gooseneck hitch.

And a few jeeps for good measure.
