BDS Coil over conversion

Post by bstefanic » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:47 pm

Has anyone else seen the new BDS coil over conversion lift? You should see the pictures of them testing it out...suspension made it but the axle tube was bent and blew out some ball joints. I emailed them to see if they're going to offer the option of just buying the coil overs and conversion kit along with a hemi tune vs. diesel. Pretty interesting

You get cool looking stuff but you loose quite a bit of travel due to the coil over design. The kit would need a shock hoop through the hood and punch the top of the shock through the hood just to regain OEM travel numbers. You do however get to point to the cool coil over shocks when you park on the speed bumps at the mall to show off the bling on your truck though! This kit is the result of too many customers saying "I wish you made coil over shock kit because that would be so cool and I for one would sure buy it". They are calling their bluff in hopes of making some money is all.

I would be curious about the actual travel numbers as well. For our 7" systems we run 16" coilovers and use every bit of that travel, our 3" systems are 14" travel. But it's a dual rate setup. I've never understood going to coilovers and then running a single rate spring. There is absolutely no advantage to that unless it's a custom axle swap and you don't have the coil buckets. You may as well keep a regular coil and shock setup otherwise. It's the same thing. At least with most aftermarket coil springs, you are getting a progressive or multi rate spring so you have the potential for a softer rate, those BDS coilovers are linear and much shorter than stock at that. If they are built like the old Skyjacker coilovers, the spring rates are identical to stock or very close, so you wouldn't even gain a softer ride. No clue why they would build them that way. The hardware is there, you are already paying for it, make them work.

It's also the result of BDS being absorbed by Fox. So now that Fox owns them it a way for them to sell more 2.5" coilovers.

Maybe they'll start making some decent bushings for their long arms if fox owns them now

Don't hold your breath. My guess is that Fox will try to make the company profitable and then sell it off.
