Need new shocks opions?
Got a stock 2008 quad cab power wagon it has 53000 miles on it noticed that one of the shocks is leaking any opions on what to buy and where . I tow a boat a lot and go off-road some also if that matters

Re: Need new shocks opions?
I love my bilstein 7100s. They are a big step up from the 5100 series and arnt as pricy as going up to kings. But there are a lot of options. Search the carli shock packages up at 8lugtruckgear.com also there are stock and slightly improved shocks but then they will be no better than the stock if not worse. Hoping some of the fellows who have run the majority of the upper range ones will chime in
08 ctd--mini max--thuren 3" coils and LT Leaves--4.56 gears and lockers in pw axles--some lights--afe intake system--bd super b turbo--Banks w/m Injection--Dynatrac Balljoints--king 2.5"s--37" Hankook Dynapro MT--DOR Long arms--Custom emf track bar--Manual T-case swap--Full PW Under armor--PSC Hydro Assist and so much more

Re: Need new shocks opions?
FWIW, when I bought a used Tundra recently, it needed new shocks. I wanted Bilstein 5100s but could not get them quickly so we put on a set of ProComps. I have never been a fan of ProComp, and I'm still not. The half-ton Tundra with IFS and ProComps and 33s rides worse than the PW on stock suspension with 35s. Comfort considerations aside, the Tundra exhibits a lot more bump steer than it did on its original shocks, and more than any other truck I have owned. I can only attribute that to the jounce control in the ProComps. Both Tundra and PW are rolling Toyo AT-IIs.
When the PW needs shocks, they will probably be Bilstein 7100s. Seems like the best bang for the buck on that truck, and worth holding out for.

Re: Need new shocks opions?
The 5100's are a good solid shock, substantially better than the stockers. 7100's are better yet, but double the cost. Fox IPF is in between those two, and are rebuildable. So, it's really up to your budget - with shocks, $$$ really does make a difference.

I know this has to be asked 1000 times but...what's the difference between stock Bilstein and 5100? What's the jump in spec to 7100's?

Re: Need new shocks opions?
I think when the time comes (and it's going to be soon since two of the stock shocks are blown and leaking oil), I'll be going with the Thuren Fox 2.0 shocks. I'm not looking for the desert racing shock tuning as found on Carli's shocks. I just want something to give me a smooooooth ride and stop the crab walking on the highway's potholes that are unavoidable. Hopefully the Fox 2.0 shocks will solve that problem?

Re: Need new shocks opions?
Fox 2.0 IFP non resis or 5100s. 8 lug truck gear carries them both in package deals and the foxs are a tad more expensive then the 5100s. When I get the coin ill be swapping my 5100s for them and ill do a comparison. Either way is a step up from OEM. I think the 5100s are a little harsh but I like a softer suspension feel which from what I hear the Fox's are softer. I like the fact that the foxs are rebuildable and valveable. Granted they aren't a super tunable desert shock like the kings, but if you really dont like the valving or you blow a seal you can have them fixed to your liking. To me thats worth the extra cost over the sealed bilstein units. Give George at 8 lug a call. He's awesome to deal with
Re: Need new shocks opions?
You know that ride feeling with about 200 pounds in the rear of the bed? That's how I want my truck to ride ALL THE TIME!

Re: Need new shocks opions?
So keep 200 pounds back there all the time
honestly aside from maybe playing with tire pressure a bit the unloaded ride of these is darn nice. I swapped from stock 2500 diesel leafs to pw leafs and it was a huge improvement. When I think my truck rides like shit I just take a spin in my unloaded 50k gvwr work truck and it makes me appreciate the dodge all over again lol.

Re: Need new shocks opions?
Awesome feedback guys, thanks. Do the 7100's have external resvoirs you have to drill & mount to the frame? And is there specific PW valve rates in the 5100's like Bilstein does for the stocks?

They sell adapters for the reservoir that mounts off the outside bolt on your shock tower then just two hose clampsadeluca73 wrote:Awesome feedback guys, thanks. Re: Need new shocks opions?
The 5100's I used (PN's are in my build thread) are stiffer than stock. That helped to reduce the sloshing with the swaybar disconnected. They also improved handling over washboard roads. I will be upgrading shocks in the next few months - the 5100's now have close to 60000 miles of hard use on them. At this point I'm considering Fox remote res shocks after using the non res 2.0 IPF's on our JKUR. The Jeep handles the rough stuff better than it did with the AEV tuned 5100's, and they were pretty good to start with.

The 7100's that most guys are talking about is actually the Carli Performance 2.0 shock package with Hemi valving. It works on the 03-12 trucks only though.adeluca73 wrote:Awesome feedback guys, thanks. Do the 7100's have external resvoirs you have to drill & mount to the frame? I went back with the stock ones . Found a set that were eight years old but only had 250 miles on them . Guy bought the power wagon the. Lifted it and took the stocks off and put in storage . 150 dollars for new shocks can't beat that
