High Mileage PW Help-Issues

Post by MidnightPW » Sat Aug 16, 2014 7:02 am

Looking at a clean 05 PW locally with 146,000 miles, seems clean and straight, no mods except dual exhaust and new tires a size bigger. Anyone out there got their PW to 150,000 miles and up and what have you had for issues?
Any common problems I could be overlooking even if it runs out strong?
Thanks in advance for any guidance..........

Make sure the lockers and smart bar work. Look at the seals for the pinions on both diffs and front axle shafts. Make sure it still has the winch on it.

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to get an engine oil sample from it and send it for analysis. That may be able to give you an indication of how healthy the internals are. Other than that, the hemi engine is really reliable, so if the lockers and smart bar work, and the trans and transfer case is smooth, go for it!

Oh, and in case you've never checked into this, Amsoil and Blackstone are two reliable places to get it done.

Rusty covered the most common areas. I might also add steering / front end. Drive over some "bumps" checking for "death wobble".

It would be an okay price if everything works, if not you could be looking at some pricey repairs, the engine and transmission if maintained could give you another 100k miles.

The front-end if orginal will need most parts replaced. The lockers, sway-bar and winch, as already indicated, are subject to water contamination in the connectors, which can get expensive real fast.

Is it from an area that is subject to a lot of rust? If so plan on replacing some front axle u-joints if they are the originals.

I purchased my 2005 Power Wagon with 156,000 miles on it for 12,000. Everything was tight and leak free except the power wagon equipment didn't work yet it was all there!!! I fixed everything myself so it was well worth it. Another thing to keep your eye out for are the control arm bushings.... Mine are shot and i'm currently saving up to buy some good aftermarket ones.

I had a 2004 2500 that I bought with 17 miles on it and sold it with 185k with no issues, did not even do a tune up on it (hate to admit to that) Bought the 06 PW with 72k miles on it and now have 150k. Only issue is the sway bar quit engaging. Tried opening it up and giving it some lubrication and no luck, finally just ignored it for a year and a half and all of a sudden it is working agian. At Least so far, they have both been pretty solid trucks

that sounds high for that mileage, even if everything works. better be a mall crawler for that price. you can alway haggle them down on price.
