tire beads

I know this has been talked about. Want to put beads in my tires. I have access to tire machine to break them down. My question is how much do i put in and does it affect anything when airing down?

Yeah I am having a tough time with mine. Tire guy said it's the only way to balance tires as big as 35". I call bullshit but I'm stuck til I find something better. If you don't have to have them stay away!!!

Are you running 35" tires I would try 10 OZ first and see how that does.

I always argue with tire shops. They always cave when i tell them that i know that 'they' are skilled enough to manage to balance them where lesser shops cannot. I've never run beads with any of the 35's or 37's I've run. Ever

I put beads in my 40's on Hutchinsons and did the entire 5000+ miles during the UA and they were perfect the whole way. thousands of miles n not an issue. i run my tires at 30-35 psi on road. 20 on moderate trails. 10 in gnarly terrain. no issues. thats mt .02

I'm running into the same problem, just had my new tires mounted and balanced using beads and now at any sort of speed it wobbles pretty bad. Took it back in and the response was they're mud tires so they're always going to do that...despite repeatedly informing them I just took off 37" mud tires and they road fine. Additionally, they said they only put 6 oz of beads in and despite me telling them they need to put more they've essentially given up even trying. After talking to multiple shops locally and getting essentially the same, "they're big mud tires, they're going to ride like shit response" its getting pretty irritating...but I guess that's what I get for living in the North East where there are zero off road shops.

Damn that sucks. You need probably 12 oz is what I would try. Im running 14 oz in my 40" tires which are Goodyear MTRs which people say are hard to balance and I love the ride. Smother and better than my 35" tires I had the shop balance. Down here everyone has big tires! 35" tires are small around here. Shit my 40" tires are nothing special except I'm not a pavement princess. I've put over 5000 miles on these and they are smoother than my 2010 ford flex lol. Plus I have beadlocks and I don't trust anyone to install them around here. It would blow their minds! Lol. I did a ton of research before I went to beads to get a pretty close weight so I wouldn't have to break the tires down multiple times and it payed off with a great ride that I'm very happy with. So 6 oz isn't gonna cut it, try 12 oz. I'm no expert but from the hundreds of write ups I read on balancing with beads this should put you pretty damn close. Good luck and let me know how close I was.

Just got a new set of tires today. They are stock size and was thinking about using beads. So would it be 8 or 9 oz for that size? Do you use the beads alone or with external weights or does it matter?

I would just go with regular weights. Talked to an off road shop who really sounded like they knew what they were talking about. Apparently most regular tire shops use bead bags designed for 18 wheelers not ones for off road tires so sometimes they never even end breaking open all the way. He seemed confident that they could balance them using physical weights, just a pisser the place is two hours away

Took mine in and they said same thing. Only use beads on tractor trailers. Ended up breaking one tire down. Something about geometrics and matching tire to rim. Seem to work. Mines good now. Only charged 20 bucks.

Have talked to multiple 4x4 shops and they all said tire beads don't work...when installed by people who really don't know how to do it right, they've tried them and never work correctly. Have the truck sitting on jack stands right now and bringing the tires up to get re balanced tomorrow so hopefully it works.

Finally got my tires actually balanced by someone who knows what they're doing...they took a ton a weight but god what a difference. Between 60-65 mph there is a still a little wobble but besides that they run like a dream, its a night and day difference. These bad boys are loud but actually really love them, hopefully going to get a little mud on them finally tomorrow.

No magic weight, each tire was kind of all over the place requiring anywhere from 10-16 oz of weight. They used stickies on the inside of the wheel and it wasn't just weight on one side of the tire, they needed them kind of all over the place.

One thing to note, if you would normally need 10 oz. of wheel weights, then you will need more than 10 oz. in balancing beads for it to work.
