Baby Seat in a 3g

Post by fyrfytr704 » Thu Jul 31, 2014 10:29 pm

Well, gents, I'm about 4 months from our first being born. I was thinking that my quad cab would get us by on space but after picking some friends up at the airport, I think I might be wrong. With their 17 month old 's seat behind the passenger (only my outside seats have LATCH), there was maybe 8-10" between the front of the seat and the glove box. That doesn't seem like the Mrs would be to comfortable - and we know what that leads to. I'm 6'-7", so it can't go behind me! A big part of me is thinking that I may be going to a diesel mega cab with a 5.9 just so I've got room for me and the mrs, along with the dog and the baby.

So, do any of you have any experience in this?

Put the seat in the center, use the inner mounts for driver & passenger...problem solved!

We thought about that, too. I'm a little concerned that the husky will trample the kid tho. He's not exactly a calm dog. :)

Congratulations!

Get a restrant for the dog. They make adapters for the dog to be buckled in. This not only keeps the dog from running wild in the truck, but will also protect it in a crash. I would work with the dog and get them use to it before the baby comes.

I have a 4th gen with the crew cab and it is more than enough room for the car seats.

Will he ride in the back? Maybe buy a topper to keep the pup out of the weather...

That's not a bad option. He's a houdini... he can get out of anything. I wonder what he'd do in the bed with a topper on it.

I thought about a 4th gen, but can't justify the cost. If I spend that kinda cash on a truck it's gonna need to get decent mpg. Lol

Congratulations, in my experience the use of both inner tethers works just fine. And I know your dog may not seem very tame now but dogs generally know to gentle with infants, it's crazy how they act around small babies. But a dog car restraint is an awesome idea.

My dog normally rides in the bed with a cap. She has a carpeted tool box she can lay on and look outside. When she rides in the cab she is in a restraint which she got used to quite easily.

you have to be carefull with a rear faceing baby seat if you put it in the middle, the way the seat is cut out for the cup holder it doesn't support the front of the seat base well at all. I had mine on the pass side with the pass front seat pulled up. The good news is once they go into a normal forward faceing car seat you gain back alot of lost space. I was lucky and have a short wife that was fine with the pass seat pulled forward. and by the way congats!!

Thanks, guys. We are excited to have our first. I think the biggest hurdle so far is the baby seat thing which I'll get sorted out.

This is Seamus. I think we will try the restraint thing and see how that goes. I've had concerns about the middle seat not being as deep as the sides, so I'm gonna borrow a baby seat that my sister's little guy used to use and try a couple of things.

If that doesn't pan out, I'll be finding a 3g mega cab with a cummins or getting a new 2014 2500 with a cummins. The old lady wants fuel economy and comfort for road trips and the ability to pull a camper. You should see what her taste in campers is like. If it's not 34 feet long and like a Hilton inside she isn't Interested. Image

I'll send some pictures when I get home but we have a one year old in a rear facing seat and a 2.5 year old in a forward facing seat. I'm 6'4" and the older one goes behind me. It's better than our other vehicles so we use it on long road trips (6hrs to see the in laws sorta thing).

Having said that, my folks have a F250 crew cab and it is way roomier. I might be tempted by the new dodge crew cab if you can swing the payments. We can't so we make what we have work.

We can't use the middle position with either of our car seats. The cut out doesn't give enough support so I don't believe the seat would stay put in an accident. Not worth the risk to us anyways.

Thanks for the offer on the pictures and for taking the time to reply. I will be interested to see how you've got everything set up. Believe me, I am looking for every reason to keep my PW. Aside from the fact that I pay less than $200/mo for it, I really love the truck. I was thinking about the middle position, as well, but agree that having less depth doesn't seem like a risk that's worth the reward of a little bit more comfort for the passenger.

Haha... I knew someone was going to go there! No way in hell am I trading in a PW on a minivan. Even the Mrs refuses to drive a minivan - her mom mobile is her 2013 Charger RT Max (AWD) with the hemi.

I am staying with the winch mob as long as possible. Let's face it, I need to be on that May trip to Moab next year!

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

I went from a Dakota to the PW knowing that I would have a baby seat in the back soon and it wasn't going to work out with the Dak. My son is now six and has been sitting in the back since day one both rear facing and forward. Now it's booster seat time and pretty soon he'll be asking me for the keys!

An argument against a mini van is that your PW is a much larger, heavier vehicle and IMHO a much safer vehicle for a young child.

That being said, Ive been using a minivan for 10 yrs for my 3 kids and now Im ready to move on to a PW!!

An argument for a minivan is that as the kids get a bit older they can get in/out of the vehicle themselves which may not be the case with a PW.

Just my 2 cents form a FDNY FF. Be safe.

i hate to say i own a honda odyssey minivan. with 3 kids under 4 years old it was the only option. i have to say they are awesome for kids. i am however counting down the days till i get to trade it in for a suburban or tahoe. my wife calls it the 'man van'. she's threatened to have flames painted on the side of it.

I would like to see Dodge make a HD full size SUV similar to the Ford Excursion. If I could have my PW exactly the way it is now but be a full SUV, I'd like it even more.
