HELP!!! Out numbered million to 1

Post by TonkaPW » Sat Jul 26, 2014 9:26 pm

Ok guys I have a major problem, my truck has become home to an entire colony of ants. They are every where. Coming out of the vents, out from under the carpet, out of the seat belt openings. At first ithought that maybe some ants found their way in and started feasting on the collection of food the kids have dropped under the seats, but based on the shear numbers of ants and the fact that some looked to be carrying eggs I am positive the whole family moved in.

Any ideas would help. I have already started the poison baits but that could take up to 2 weeks to do the trick a bombing the truck is a no go because I have to transport the kids and baby.

Go get some Terro ant killer. Place drops of this liquid on small pieces of cardboard under the seats and around the inside of the vehicle where the kids won't touch them. They take the poison back to the others - so don't kill them yourself. In a few days you may find a few dead ants around, but they will be essentially gone. Terro is the best stuff out there!

Big question is - where did they find a suitable spot for a colony, and can you get to it to clean it out...

Already got it in the truck and it looks like they like it. The package said it could take up to two weeks to get them all.

This has happened to me too and at the same time of year. Terro is some good stuff. Just keep it away from the little ones. There was no reason for them to move into my truck other than shelter. I suffocated them in my truck. I put a few bricks of dry ice in my truck and kept it closed for a few days. I don't advise doing the CO2/dry ice though. It messed up cloth seats and steering wheel.

Had the same problem years back. What I did was park the truck in sunlight with the heat on full speed and the windows shut for about 30 min. Then shut the truck off and kept the windows shut for the rest of the day. Killed them all.

If the terro doesn't work fast enough for you try a product called , termidor. Its a little expensive but its the best thing out there, hands down. I ran a pest control compay for 7 years before joing the military. It works in like 6 hrs and will kill every single one of the little ass holes

Thanks for all the help and advice, the Terro looks like its working. Cleaned the truck out so that's all they had to munch on all day yesterday. I was in the SOBX last week and the ants had been a problem every where on the island from what the guy at the local hardware store was telling me. I think they moved to the truck after the garbage man dumped the trash and left the cans sitting by the truck. I figure once that food source had been taken they were on the hunt for something new when a scout happened upon the the truck and some of the goodies the kids had dropped between the seats on the drive down. The half a juice box of apple juice my son dumped under the back seat I'm sure was a gold mine for them. I figure the whole colony moved in when the heavy rains hit. The water table on the island is only a couple of feet below the surface so they must have been looking for a dry place and the truck is what they found. I'm just glad they weren't fire ants. I had a run in with them when I was younger and we had to drive 6 hours with them in the truck home yesterday. That would have been a nightmare with fire ants.

When I was stationed in the panhandle of Florida, I took my Xterra into some low land islands & got bombarded by Fire Ants. One of my top 3 most horrible experiences, took 6 months for the welts to heal on my ankles & feet. I bug bombed the truck for an entire weekend, then paid $100 to have the interior professional detailed. Worst!

Once you get the ants taken care of. Put a couple of Bounce Dryer sheets inside the PW. Critters don't like the sheets and will stay out. Also you can use moth balls too. If you like the smell of them.
