Whinch Probs....... HELP
I rarely use my winch, in the past 5 yrs between my brother and I owning it its been usd maybe 4 times, neither of which to pull itself. last time i used it was about 3 months ago and that was actually just to reposition the hook. I got a lanyard for it and went to winch it out this morning to install it and nothing, I cant get anything out of it. wont do squat, all the conections are clean and tight, it will not even click. I also tried my other warn remote and nothing. Any body have any suggestions?

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
I'd say a solenoid or multiple ones (there are 4). Did you try both in and out? Free spool and engaged?

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
Gotta be a wiring problem.
I'd start with some electrical contact cleaner and spray down the controller and winch connections first. Look at the connector pins for corrosion. If that doesn't do it, it gets more complicated - pull the cover off the winch control and start inspecting wiring. The solenoid pack would be next, checking connections and for corrosion. Usually if the thermal bypass fails it will winch out, but not in, so that doesn't sound like the problem.
Worst part about this is we get no support from Warn, and as we know, the dealers no absolutely nothing about Power Wagons...
The good thing is that it's pretty much a standard 15K Warn, so the parts are available.
Good luck!

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
I live near Portland Oregon, home of Warn, and when I managed to pull the wires out of my winch controller they were very helpful. You can call their tech support but I had better luck emailing. I called 503-722-1200 and explained my issue and they had a service tech email me, he sent me wiring diagrams for the winch and controller. Very helpful and the response time was within a day.
You need to see if you are getting power to the solenoids, then you can tell if they are bad. But if ALL of the solenoids aren't clicking it might be the power to them.

My money is on this, if it won't click or nothing all, chances are it's not grounded. Probably corroded overtime.stamm20 wrote:I had a problem like that with mine and I had to replace the negative battery connector.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
So i just went out see if the whinch would work and it did. I believe that my issue is the thermal bypass. I was whinching a buddy out and got stuck myself. So I hooked up to a tree and whinched myself out, it was up hill and the mud was like cake frosting, super thick and heavy, I've never seen mud like that before. Well I got out and the whinch just quit, so I think I got the whinch to hot.
Is there a fix for this?

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
For anyone who isn't aware... You shouldn't winch out for any reason other than to create slack. You should always pull the lever and freewheel line out because when you winch out, you are fighting against the internal brake which creates heat very quickly due to friction, very much like driving with your parking brake engaged. You'll wear out the internal brake and the heat can also damage synthetic line if you have any not to mention it likely will reduce the life of the winch itself. There was a video of someone who used a heat sensor gun to measure heat buildup on winches under use and it was astounding how quick the heat jumped up past 200 degrees while winching out. Winching in however didn't build up heat nearly as quick although if you are really working it out (full load) while winching it in, it can also overheat but not because your dragging the brake. A snatch block will cut your load on the winch by 50% which will reduce heat buildup while winching in.

Re: Whinch Probs....... HELP
Very true. I only winch out to un hook the line when I am done. I also had a snatch block, but in the end it was a lot of pulling.
