How to install this diff cover

Post by shaner82 » Sat Mar 29, 2014 7:52 am

Bought this diff cover for the front and not really sure how to install this.
http://www.solidaxle.com/productcart/pc ... category=7

Does this completely replace the factory diff cover? It seems like the Carli one is a guard, but this is an actual replacement cover. Is that correct?

If so, obviously I need to get a drain pan and pull off the factory cover. Then what? Sorry for the noob question, but I don't want to screw anything up. Do I need to refill all the diff fliud? How much and with what, and at what point do I refill it, once it's bolted on and tightened? What about this magnet I've read about, do I have to even concern myself with that, or do I just bolt this new one on and fill it up?

Thanks for the help

Also, this specific cover did not come with any bolts. Their website doesn't state whether it's supposed to or not. Anyone else ordered this, and if so, did it come with its own bolts?

The web page you posted says it comes with zinc plated hardware. I would contact them. The OEM bolts are probably too short to use on this cover.

It is a full cover, btw. It replaces the factory cover. You might as well get new oil in there when you change it. Read some of the threads about changing fluids, cleaning magnets, etc. The OEM gasket is reusable. Wipe it clean and put it back.

One thing to watch is the clearance between the cover and track bar. I know Rockcrusher covers needed to be ground a little to avoid contact. I'm not sure about this one.

When you install the cover. Check your clearance of the cover and the bracket for the steering damper. You might have to grind the cover web where the "S" is on the cover.

I bought the same one about 3 months ago, but haven't put it on yet. It is heavy duty cover. Should be able to take a pounding and continue on:) mine came with the hardware, so you should contact them and let them know you didn't receive the hardware. Mine came with hardware and A tube of RTV.

Hmm....I've seen this one before. I have been thinking about getting it. For those that have it, are you sure that it fits the 14 bolt 9.25 AAM Axel (I know it says it does, but I have been burned before). If it does, I may swap it out with my Carli diff protector.

I am interested about the fit as well. Can you use the oem gasket with it? The price is right compared to the Carli diff guard

I have this cover on my truck and its quite a heavy piece and looks quite nice under the truck. The only clearance issues I had was with the track bar frame bracket on full compression of the drivers side, so I put longer bump stops in and trimmed them so they touch 1" before the cover hits the frame. ( 5" day star bump stops )
