Engine RPM controller?

Engine RPM controller?
I'm looking for a way to maintain a higher engine RPM (besides feathering the pedal) while winching to help keep the battery voltage up. Does anyone have a solution for this? I've been checking out a Diablo Trinity tuner/programmer and noticed that it can adjust the idle RPM but will it raise it more than just a couple hundred RPMs? Thanks guys!
Re: Engine RPM controller?
this is something I have been wondering as well. I just put a second battery in, but have not gotten to do any pulls with the winch. I am sure it will help some, but the more power the better

Re: Engine RPM controller?
Off Road Engineering makes a high idle kit that works on our trucks. I have had mine in for a while now and love it. It can activate manually or it will also activate if the voltage drops. Has to be in neutral or park with the parking brake on tho, but that is only if you wire it as instructed. Part number is HIC-300. It is adjustable from 1500 to 2500 rpms if I remember.
Edit: forgot to mention it only works on 4g I think

Re: Engine RPM controller?
Just a suggestion but there are some good alternators out there that output the stock peak at low rpm. And some are double. A lot of bolt in solutions.

Re: Engine RPM controller?
May be wrong but I think our alternators do put out high voltage at idle but it's the amperage that you really need and that only comes at a higher RPM with pretty much any altetnator, right?

Re: Engine RPM controller?
The voltage is regulated by the charging system in the 14 volt range. The pw has a 160 amp peak alternator. But that amperage is not at idle rpms. There are ones available from Chrysler or from acdelco that are 180-200amp. Again rated at higher rpms but at low rpms would be higher than the pw. I have seen some rated at 200 low rpm with a 270peak. To me an alternator change and/or double batts would be the simplest most reliable way to go

Re: Engine RPM controller?
I've used my 4th gen many times pulling stumps on my land, so much to the point I've had to stop a wait for the winch to cool down lots of times (winter with low temps) and never had an issue with not having enough juice to get the job done with one battery and the factory alternator... Literally wore the factory cable out and a spool of synthetic rope (which I highly recommend)

Re: Engine RPM controller?
I'm pretty sure the stock 2010-2013 alternator is 180amps. I put in a second battery and the high idle kit. I have had pulls where the high idle kicks on automatically because the voltage has dropped. I figure do everything you can to bolster your electrical system. A high output alternator might be in my future as well. Wonder if anybody will make a dual alternator kit for us since the new one can have duals.

Re: Engine RPM controller?
I was thinking of the 3G output. The new 14 dual would be sweet. Even just getting the second alt they have and using it as main.

I just checked mine and it is a 180 amp.

Re: Engine RPM controller?
3rd Gens have 160 amp stock alt's & 4th Gens have 180 amp alt's stock. the thing is, factory alts are designed to put out their "peak" amps at speed, or 1800- 2500 rpms or even MUCH higher. They only put out 40-60 amps at idle. The aftermarket has MUCH better options.

Some options. Read the specs after you scroll down. These put out "at idle", more than our stock ones do at their "peak" amps !!!

Re: Engine RPM controller?
That's what I was looking at too. Seems a good alt and maybe dual batt and should be more than enough power for anything

Re: Engine RPM controller?
Thanks for all of the helpful replies! I'm not around my PW at the moment so I can't take a peak: Is there room under the hood of an 06 for a second battery and does anyone offer a mounting/cable kit for it? Also, has anyone with the Diablo programmer messed around with the idle adjustment to see what the range is?
Re: Engine RPM controller?
Using the diablo to adjust RPM when needed is a PAIN IN THE A$$ it takes to long to go through the program and set new rpm and then to setting back would take just as long. Roughly 5min or more

Re: Engine RPM controller?
The short answer is "no." The longer answer is that can can mount one in a second box on the passenger side firewall, using a box from a diesel or V-10 (forget which used that box). This only works if you modify the intake/air cleaner system to make space. You can't get away with that in some states that require periodic smog tests (like California). Another underhood alternative would be to build a cradle to mount to the front core support between the radiator and the inside face of the grill. I tested battery fit in that location when I was fitting my compressor there, and I easily fit two Optima 34/78s side-by-side on the cradle with plenty of clearance. I'll see if I can find pics on this computer. Is there room under the hood of an 06 for a second battery
Re: Engine RPM controller?
Using the diablo will get you 500 rpms. I know on the predator you can set the higher idle when you shut the ac off. Turn ac on, and rpms drop to normal.
