Need advice trading in Ford Raptor

Post by HP4 » Fri Jan 17, 2014 3:10 am

I'm not looking to get flamed for owning a ford, I'm switching :P

Well to start off I use to live in Arizona so at the time a raptor was practical for going very fast in the desert. Now that I've moved to northern Canada I'm getting into trail scene and for obvious reason I'm looking to trade it in for a 2014 Power Wagon.

I've got some questions though, I've seen a few 2013s rocking 37s with a 4 inch lift, does it take away from anything? on some of them it looked like the tire wouldn't even fit in the wheel well.

Are there any important must have upgrades for the power wagon?

I've got a short wife so she'll need some sort of step to get in, are power steps worth it as far ground clearance and will they get damaged if you high center or something along those lines.

Any first hand knowledge you guys are willing to past down I'm willing read and will be grateful for and thanks for your time :)

Coming from Northern Canada myself, a good set of 35s are all you need. Depending on your area (Northwestern Canada gets a lot of snow) you'd need to adapt for that and huge tires don't do so well in the snow.
I can't personally answer the lift question... There are guys with much more experience
There's a lot of upgrades... Look at the build threads and you should find a common thread between most of the mods. (http://forum.powerwagonregistry.org/viewforum.php?f=13)
WHite knuckle off road has some decent steps and if you don't lift it, they will suffice (http://white-knuckleoffroad.com/powerwagon.htm). I don't trust the power ones myself, but lots of people use them.

Take a look at the step/sliders on Cactus Red - they serve both purposes very well. There are powered steps that also serve as armor, but they are exceedingly expensive. Personally, I wouldn't even consider the non armored powered steps as an option due to the cost and how easy they are to damage.

I'm looking into the bigger tire idea myself, and I'm waiting on the fender flares and wheels from AEV before I do anything to my truck. I only have 19,000 miles on my 2012 Power Wagon, so my stock tires will last me a while.

Here's the AEV Ram- take a look: http://www.aev-conversions.com/vehicles/ram

Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

I'm going to be fabing myself a front and rear bumper and was going to mix it up a little and do something like the sports model exhaust out the back bumper. Going to be doing some steps sort of like the white knuckle stuff but a little customized to fit me better.

As far for 35 inch tires, I actually put the stock raptor tires and rims back on since they were only used to drive home and took my rims and toyo open country m/ts off, I'm aware that aggressive tread isn't great for snow but I got nothing but time :P

I've been reading into AEV Ram when I saw that added to there website, I actually bought the jeep brute conversion kit awhile back and did a ls crate engine swap in a 06 jeep wrangler with 40s on there, I like the look. I heard that there might be a lift kit from them down the road and that I'd be interested in, not sure about 40s though.

I live in Missoula where one of the AEV Offices is, and I've spoken in length to the folks there. In addition to the setup for 40" tires, they also have some things in the works that would make more sense for those of us with Power Wagons that want to stay stock height and run 37" tires. The idea of 37" tires on my stock setup is really what I'm after. Hopefully around March we'll know more.

Yeah I'd like to run 37s but I don't know about stock height, maybe one or two inches extra.

My understanding is that the Carli 3" kit will allow 37's with no rubbing or clearance issues.

On stock rims the 37" tires will rub on the control arms. Maybe with different wheels you can avoid that.

Speaking from a perspective of a truck that gets used off road and articulates on winding trails...

The 3G and 4G front bumper will not clear 37" tires and will need modified or replaced.

On a 3G or 4G the stock wheels clear the back of the front fender but rub the control arms and reduce the ability to turn sharp at low speed.

However for the 3G wheels that have an offset to clear the arms (Like H2 wheels) will hit the back of the fender and require some fender trimming to clear.

Now for the rear of the 3G with either rim the axle will need to be relocated back 1/2" either with new springs or a block that allows it to have the pin offset by a half inch to the rear. Otherwise the front bedsides and tires will take damage when compressed fully. I have no idea what if any issues are on the 4G with the 37s and rear tire clearance

I've heard the 2014 PW won't be available until mid year.

Not exactly what i would opt for for the trails out here either, TJ or JK seems to be the main choice amongst the trail crowd.

Hello HP4,

The 2014's have a brand new 3 link in front and 5 link in the rear suspension and there are no lifts available for it yet especially no good ones. So you may have to live with the stock suspension for awhile, which is actually not to bad.

I saw a 2014 2500 in the Carli Suspension shop a few weeks ago, one of the top tier Dodge aftermarket suspension manufacturers, it was their test truck for designing a new 2014 system.

There are some challenges with the 2014's one of the main ones is the rear shocks are a pin-top style shock that mount straight through the rear frame, with barely enough room to fit an OEM shock. It will take time and some creative thinking before some good suspensions for the 2014 PW are on the market.

I don't get it, why is it funny? lol

I get that a jeep would be better for trails but I need a truck for outside of all that.

I was just cracking a joke that you need a real truck in Canada..... Haha
Up where I am from, a truck works just fine on the FSRs.

I see, wouldn't hurt considering how much it snows here in Manitoba lol, even then if I didn't like to mess around 4x4ing or pulling things I think I would still get a truck for how practical they are being able to carry things in the back without having to rent a trailer, in fact I just got a new quad and would have had to rent a trailer if I had a suv or something lol

My 2012 seems to be ok with the bds lift I installed it's a long arm system so I can't utilize a lot of the bolt
On rock sliders that are available for the 4g's I run 37 12.5's with an aft market wheel that runs a 4.5" b.space. My only issue was the front fenders and the pinch welds that would
Rub on full articulation and turning etc. that was fixed with a grinder and a hammer :)

O and that's my dad's 4g on the left lol also being from canada (Ontario) these trucks seem to work we'll for a great all around truck lifted or not they tow pretty much whatever you want whenever and they will go anywhere a raptor will. Only thing you might hate if you get a stock power wagon is the rear axle wrap is terrible especially compared to the raptor
