Random thoughts- fender removal & cutting, 1" lift & 40s???

If it's about Power Wagons, all generations, this is where it'll go. This is the original PWR Forum Power Wagon Technical Discussion Section. And this includes everything that doesn’t fit in any one of the other categories related to the truck goes here!

Iroks do good but wear really fast. About 25,000 miles out of them.

04ram2500hemi: Yeah, that AEV rig gives me some bad intentions! LOL!

05PWrockcrawler: I looked at the MTRKs (since that's what 37s I have now) but, the 40s I found are load range C. Maybe I just need to look harder? The Toyo MTs in 40x13.50R17 that I found are load range C as well. The IROKs had the highest load range of any I could find in near that size. Sounds like I need to keep looking though, 25k miles is a bit too fast! Thanks!

EDIT: Oddly, the load range C 40x13.50R17 MTRKs and the Toyo Open Country MTs in the same size have the same load rating as our stock tires (3195lbs) so, I guess they would be okay after all, just seems odd to put load range C tires on a 3/4 ton truck! The 39.5" IROKs are load range E with 4,080lb rating by comparison. I guess the more important thing to look at is the lbs rating, not the letter?

Yeah rating not letter would be the way to go. If I go 37" I'm going to run Pitbulls, if I decide to try 40" tires I'm going with Goodyear MTR kevlars. And if that's too big maybe the 39" Iroks is my last choice. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

It's gonna be a WHILE before I step to 40s, I would like to do it tomorrow BUT, looks like it'll be after these 37s wear out.

I think you should go with 40s!!! 37s are great but, I wish I had the clearance from 40s, I got denied on a trail just this past weekend since I didn't have quite enough (literally 1.5") clearance. It may have been for the best though, there would have been (more) body damage on that trail, LOL!

While I've been out of the loop for a while and don't really have any tire advice, I do have one thought on the whole "fitting large tires with a small lift" thing. In my past experience, nearly all problems can be fixed with fender trimming - with the one major exception being the clearance on the back of the front tires (where they meet the doors & passenger/driver footwells). Even if you start with 1" longer control arms I think that'll still be the problem area, because while cutting off the ends of the front bumper and trimming the bedsides isn't a big issue, modifying the structure of those front cab corners is a royal pain in the butt. Plus, even with new control arms you'll still need to offset the wheels out further for clearance...and that combined with wider tires will make the clearance for turning even worse.

Of course, that's just my two cents...and perhaps turning isn't that big an issue, because I see lifted trucks all the time that look like they can barely turn the front wheels. :)
