Post by ScottWagon1 » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:39 pm

So I have a ?-
1.Can Dodge reflash my truck to correct the speedo and shift points for 35'' tires?
2. If dodge cant do it and someone else does will it effect my warranty?
What are my options fella's?

Dodge cannot change to 35" tires, they can only change to stock size tires. Best option is a tuner...

I wouldn't (and didn't) worry about it. I have been running 35s on my '05 since shortly after I got it with no reflash and no issues. Shift points are not a big deal, truck runs fine and hunts for a gear in the mountains so I just put it in Tow/Haul mode and keep cruising. You can do the math for your specific tires to know what your speedo and odo adjustment should be, and just carry that in your head. Mine is off by about 6%, so when the speedo says 70, I'm actually doing 74, and I know that. I have an Edge Insight gauge pod (not a programmer) on the dash and it gives me the ability to monitor eight (I think) parameters, so one of them is set to give me real time road speed for my tires, but does not affect the truck speedo or the computer. Some programmers give you the same ability to display accurate speed.

And remember that the factory speedos are built to read just a bit high for legal and regulatory reasons, so whatever speed you think you are going is not quite right, unless you are using a GPS for average speeds over reasonable distances.

Dodge should be able to program for 35" tires it depends on the vehicle. They reprogramed my 2012 2500 with the 6.7 for the 33" tires I have on it the day I bought it. I since bought a programmer for it but for other reasons. What the mechanic told me was that each vehicle has a preset amount of tires they can program for. He said the wranglers have the most options. I haven't asked about my power wagon since I don't have plans on going to bigger tires until the factory ones ware out. I would ask your dealer in the service department. If you want I can ask mine if you don't feel like they are being straight forward with you.

I've had mine flashed twice. The first time they got me within a couple MPH around 45MPH but was off by about 5MPH at 80MPH. Then I got pulled over for speeding and the cop asked me if I'd recalibrated for the bigger tires and he'd let me off with a warning if I showed him I got them calibrated. So I took it to Dodge again (this was like 1.5 yrs later) and they told me they couldn't calibrate it correctly but they got me close. Turns out I'm only about 2MPH off at 80 now. So, as I understand it, they can not calibrate it right, just get you close.

Dodge used to be able to reflash the computer for 35's back in '08. Then they switched systems at the dealerships. The new system can only do the factory sized tires. Now you have to use one of the reprogramers.

I just put on a set of 35's this past week and went to the dealer was told the same thing about factory tire sizes only the technician said on Chrysler vehicles tire and gear only adjustments are not done on the PCM they are part of a separate module so you don't need full programmer or a complete reflash to make changes.

4wheelParts sells a Pro-comp a calibrator (a re-branded Hypertech) that just does tires and gears adjustments are in 1/4" increments from 20" to 40". I picked one up measured my tires which came out to 33 1/4" (the tire spec said 34.5" at 65 psi I am at 45 psi so I lost 1 1/4" in height I guess) made the updates and all is back to normal.

The truck seams to accelerate and shift better, I've been running slightly over sized tires for nearly 5 years and never adjusted anything before and forgot how it really drives.

Does that gizmo stay on the truck? If it isnt a permanent attachment then you should consider renting it out.

From what I read it installs just like a tuner so it's only good for one vehicle. It will store the factory programming in the tuner and replace it with a modified tune with the tire adjustments. I don't think it's much cheaper than a full programmer. Personally, I'd just buy a full on programmer and be done with it. A little more power wouldn't hurt anything.

They could do a 33" because it's a stock size on a Power Wagon, and that's the largest available factory setting. So, again, no the factory can't do a 35 anymore. Thankfully we're not locked like the Jeep - without a re-calibrated system, they go to limp mode when you change tire size.

On a Jeep? That's stupid! That's probably the vehicle that most often gets larger tires. They are going too far with locking everything down...

The full Hypertech PN# 52501programmer is about $330 the speedometer calibrator is about $220 I saw as low as $190 online. The dealer I go to told me Jeeps are the same even when they install Mopar lifts they sell the customer a Hypertech speedometer calibrator.

Yeah, it's fortunate that AEV sells a really nice unit that does multiple functions, including a fast idle setting for winching. That would be very handy for a PW. Here's to hoping they come out with one for us too!

Fast Idle wouldn't really do anything for winching, other than sound cool. Your alternator charges the batter at 14.7 volts regardless of idle, so a faster idle wouldn't be effective like you see on other large trucks. They idle up to operate a PTO driven hydraulic pump and need high idle as not to stall the engine. It has nothing to do with the electrical systems.

:D The high idle on my truck does increase the speed of my hydraulic winch...the motor of which is more powerful than the motor on any electric winch and can run all day (100% duty cycle)...... I love my CDT and my mile marker winch!

It's the amperage that we need for the winch and the alternator will put out more current at a higher RPM. And it would sound cool. Lol.

I'm running 35" tires on my 2012,and according to the GPS,the speedometer is dead on.
I live near a couple of towns that run speed traps often, and I've never been stopped for speeding,so I'd say it's pretty accurate.
That's the first thing I checked out after putting the bigger tires on it last year.

I received my Trinity yesterday, and used it to change my tire size. Instead of being 3 mph too fast, it's now 1 mph slow, and that's good enough for me. I just wish it could change the TPMS setting.

If your speedometer is 1 mph to slow at 60 mph make your tire height a 1/2" shorter on the tuner and you will be right on. I had the same issue when I used the measured height of the tire apparently that is not accurate.

I spent 20 years in the US Navy defending your and my right to "life, liberty and the persuit of happiness" and the right of free speach.

My truck is more of a power wagon than some of the ones branded that way in the past, it doesn't have badges all over it lke some I've seen on here. The forum rules must allow pics that size or it wouldn't be here, if you don't like it don't look at it.
