When is the Hemi tick, not the Hemi tick?

Post by Cactus Red » Fri Jul 12, 2013 3:37 pm

I've always attributed the ticking to what's described as the "normal" Hemi tick we've heard about.

Years, yeah, years, have gone by. This week the tick became an obvious exhaust leak. Dealer replaced a busted stud today on the right bank, and...

...it's completely quiet. No, none, nada, zip, zero tick. Makes me wonder how long it's really been since that stud busted. It's always ticked, since it was new.

They had a hell of a time getting it extracted - ended up with an insert being required to get it finished up. The guy said it was rusty on both ends, indicating an old break.

Interesting. Mine has had a tick for years but that's normal Hemi tick is what everyone has said. Gonna have to really check it out I guess.

I read on one of the dodge forums a while back about a guy with a new truck that insisted the dealer get rid of the "Hemi tick" and he was able to totaly eliminate it. I don't remember exactly what was done to the engine, I think it was related to push rods or something....

Mine developed the tic at about 15,000 miles following my first serious off road trip. Likely it was the very same exact back right (passenger side) stud was broken. Easy fix they said, they told me it came right out as there was a portion of the stud sticking out past the engine block they could grab onto.

Just last month I replaced the same stud. Only problem was I broke another disassembling. A right angle drill and reverse drill bit spun it out. Made it much quieter, but it still ticks a little.

Wait; aren't they diesels?

My neighbor thought it was anyhow. Comes out one day and says, "so how's that diesel treatin' you?"
My other neighbor (regional rep for 4WheelParts) grimaced and said, "it's a gasser; that's just Hemi tick."
Neighbor #1 replied, "huh. Sounds like a diesel..."

I had the same issue it slowly got louder over time. The A/C condensation seams to drip down on the back passenger side stud and bolt and rusts them out. I wander if there is an aftermarket replacement that is stainless?

Not sure about stainless, but I would go straight for stage 8 header bolts. You won't regret it.

Yup, them thar engineers knew what they were doing. Imagine how much $$$$$$ people have spent trying to get rid of the tic & how many finally gave up & just traded it in on something new ? Just like the front ends !!! Just another example of how a $1-2 part would make ALL the difference. Makes me

The Hemi tick doesn't bother me at all. It reminds me of some of the cars I drove in the past with solid lifter cams. The flat tappet cams with gear drives were loud.

Mine concerns me, it sounds exactly like an exhaust manifold leak. Wouldn't it trip some codes though, if it had one?

Nope, no codes. I just had both manifolds replaced on my 2010. Three broken studs, and both manifolds were a little warped.

Never threw a code, but you could really hear the leak when it was cold.

Nope no codes are thrown you must physically look it is to see if the bolt/stud is busted.

I have a 2004 1500 4x4 that I have replaced 5 or 6(or possibly more) broken exhaust manifold bolts, first the passenger side, then the drivers side. The mechanic complained A LOT, about trying to get them out. The tick does go away, for awhile. This truck has about 345000 km on it, still going strong too!

I've replaced exhaust manifold studs in every Dodge truck I've owned (2000 Dakota 4.7L, 2004 Ram 4.7L, and 2010 Ram Hemi) with the exception of my Power Wagon, and that's only because it's only got 20k miles on it, and I installed JBA headers. You'd think they would have figured out the problem by now. The 2010 was done under warranty and they ended up replacing an entire manifold because it was warped.

Well, it's back...

Truck gets dropped off next Tuesday - I suspect they will have to replace the head since they stripped out the stud the last time, and had to do a heli-coil repair.

I wonder if I should supply them with ARP studs...

ARP studs would be better but dealers usually won't install non-factory parts. I am actually am surprised that they used a heli-coil which is not a OEM fix, a new block would be the OEM fix. I'm sure the cost was the overriding factor.

Is it the back drivers side stud where the AC condensation drips down on the exhaust?

I assume that's the one - if so, it's the second time it's failed. Guess I'll find out next week.

If they used a helicoil, they probably went into the coolant passage. I think I would insist that they replace it since it is under warranty. But then again, you have lifetime B to B, so it's their problem unless they find some way to cancel it. You just need to make sure your butt is covered.

Regarding the cause, I wonder if one of us could come up with a way to either divert the drip or shield the stud. I replaced mine in June but didn't have time to experiment.

If you want to spend way too much money fixing the issue... like I did... you can go to the Dodge parts counter and buy the A/C drain hose from (I believe) a PT Cruiser and press it over the A/C condenser outlet in the firewall. It's just a small 90 degree piece of heater hose that moves the drain outlet a couple inches to the side to keep it away from the exhaust manifold bolts.

The dealer sez it's a warped manifold, and it will covered under the power train warranty. Should be done tomorrow!
