2012 Fuel Tank Capacity

Post by Dawizman » Wed Jul 10, 2013 10:37 pm

Does anyone know if the 2012's came with a smaller tank than previous model year power wagons? I swear they used to come with a 34gal tank, but I'm sure I have never gotten more than about 27 gallons in to my truck.

Anybody have any ideas, or is my fuel gauge just out of whack?

The 2013s have a smaller tank due to the urea tanks for the diesels (31 gallons, I think?) but, I think the 2012s have a 34 gallon tank. I think the truck is just pessimistic about how much fuel is left in it, I've (not purposely) run my (2012) truck for further than it said it had the fuel to run and still only had to put 31 gallons in. Also, there is likely going to be some fuel that cannot be pulled out of the tank so, gotta figure although the tank may be 34 gallons, you can't use every bit of those 34 gallons. I'd say no, your fuel gauge is not out of whack- Dodge just wants it to say empty before it really is empty so that idiots like me can run it past empty and not be stuck on the side of the road! (some manufacturers call it a reserve capacity, I remember my old roommate's Volkswagen actually had a small extra tank designed into the fuel system)

I've had two 2010s (still drive one every day), and I can definitely get 32+ gallons in to them from empty.

Also, my buddy has a 2012 2500 laramie longhorn with the hemi, and he has managed to get 33 or so gallons in to his.

I might have to throw a Jerry can in the back, and see how long it will run past empty.

Like other's said- upto 2012 has the 34 Gallon Tank. I just thing the guage and the miles till empty give us a little more room to play with. I'd much rather be safe than sorry and think I'm going to run out of gas before I actually do.

 Not really. Depends on what your doing. I have got as low as 2.6 mpg while towing the camper in 3rd gear @ 55 mph & 5500 rpms up a long steep hill in the Southerntier. Had a line of cars behind me a mile long & didn't want to piss em off any more than i already did.

I figured I should pass along some advice that was passed along to me.
With the fuel pump located in the gas tank it is cooled by the gas it is pumping. Letting your truck run out of fuel increases the chance of damaging your fuel pump. If you do run it dry shut off the ignition as soon as you can to minimize the amount of time the fuel pump is running dry.

Exactly correct, I try to never let my tank get less than 1/2 empty.......

Cruz, that's the fuel they put in it at the factory. Due to the size of the tank, there needs to be more fuel in case the truck is on an angle on the car/truck carrier when they do the delivery.
