220 Amp Alternator Upgrade

Post by Powerlinefixer » Sat Jul 12, 2025 5:19 pm

Hey yall-

In case anyone was wondering, a 220 amp alternator out of a 2013 6.7 Dodge Cummins is almost drop in replacement for a 160 amp alternator in a 2007 Power Wagon.

I upgraded my wiring but I don't know if it was 100% necessary. I just know factory wiring is usually on the ragged edge of okay so I paralleled the wire from the alternator to fuse box and the fuse box to the battery. I also paralleled the grounds from the block to the frame and the frame to the battery.

If someone dives into the factory wiring diagrams, compares the 160 amp circuit vs the 220 amp circuit, and finds the wiring sizes are the same, the 220 amp alternator is a drop in upgrade.

The pulley on the 220 amp alternator is slightly larger in diameter. It also has 8 grooves as opposed to the 7 grooves the Hemi has, but the belts are both "K" profile serpentine belts. That means the pitch and depth of the ribs are the same. It looks like the belt alignment is proper with the belt all the way to the back.

Anyway, I just thought I'd drop a note here just in case anyone was thinking if upgrading their alternator to a higher amp unit.

Another pic.

I separated the permanent battery connection from the alternator so I could fuse both runs of wire to the alternator. That way I don't have to worry about relying on the fuse link for protection.

The fuse holders I used

Fuse holders I got of Amazon. I doubt they're waterproof, but I think they're still okay.
