preventive maintence

the pw has 77k and its all factory so im going to put some new parts on before they start to fail..i do this to all my vehicles..just a peace of mind for me…i travel 120miles round trip for work..not with the pw..what im asking some input,recommendations,advice etc ….i know this has been discussed here..i dont wheel much or rock crawl…its my hunting and bad weather ride..logging roads..trails…hwy….like to improve the ride also….heres what I'm going to replace..shocks..control arms..and steering linkage.. tired of the recall notices..i have the y steering….when i change the tires i will go to 35s..looking at carli,thuren,poly,ruffstuff,bulletproof on and on………time consuming …thanks fellows

I know you have been collecting parts for quite a while. Is your plan to replace as parts wear/fail, or will you just do everything at once? I'm torn between maintenance and repair, and a rebuild/restoration.

Well its been awhile....had hip replacement and shoulder surgery...just wrapped up a complete overhaul of the front end...

I've been tweaking my '05 since I bought it new. The best mods have been:
1. Group 31 AGM battery (currently running V-Max Tanks G31)
2. High output alternator (currently running 270amp unit that uses stock serpentine belt)
3. Upgraded headlights (currently running Morimoto 55W HID projectors from RetroShop, but lots of burned connectors)
4. HIR capsules in stock Hella fog lamps (HIRs hard to find these days, but some searching can turn them up)
5. Carli spring packs in rear (gasser 2500 packs, not the diesel packs)
6. Firestone rear air bags with Daystar cups
7. Boogie Bumps in front with stock PW springs
8. Thuren-tuned Fox 2.0 remote reservoir shocks at all four corners
9. Carli steering damper
10. Hummer H2 wheels machined to fit the PW hubs
11. Toyo 35's; wore out a set of MTs, currently running AT-IIs and will probably replace with RTs. The Toyo 35" MTs cleared just fine on stock PW wheels, but the H2 wheels give you an extra 1/2" of rim width with appropriate offset, and retain the inner bead lock.

That's the important stuff. There is a lot more, including Dynatrac ball joints, diff covers, on-board air, water tank, roof rack, lots of lights, spray-in bed liner, camper shell, two more house batteries with isolators, etc. The eleven items listed above were pre-emptive improvements over the factory components. The Dynatrac ball joints were a normal maintenance item. I thought long and hard about each "improvement" and don't regret any of them, except maybe the HID headlamp conversion. The stock headlights are complete crap and I tried everything I could find before I switched to the HID's. The HIDs are a definite improvement over stock, but they have been a maintenance headache. On the other hand, I have net seen anything better. This is my hunting truck, not a daily driver.

Edit: I also have a set of Carli control arms that I bought when a screaming deal came my way. Have not installed them yet because I don't need them with my setup, but will install them if I go to 37s with the next set of Toyos. That is coming up next fall, and there is no reason (other than money) to run anything other than Toyos on these trucks. Get Load Range E.

Edit 2: Forgot the DT ProFab steering brace. I think these are pretty much mandatory of these trucks.

I also did the retro fit HIDs...years ago...big improvement my lenses are cloudy going to change them...i also did a write up on the mods for the fog lights..HIR.....after all this work...I went hunting on my property upstate NY..and my drivers side exhaust manifold cracked....lol..should I go....shorties or oem ?

May as well get a better set. I'd shoot for the longest tube possible though. Shorties are good for fitment and do flow better but your noticeable power gains come from longer tubes.

The stuff lasted about 18 months for me.

I used this for sanding the headlights. Add a few drops of baby shampoo to your water when wet sanding. I used the clear coat that came with this kit on the motorhome. It was so~so. For the PW, I used what you used. Seem a bit better.
