Windshield Wipers malfunction - need help!

Post by doc91w » Sat Feb 16, 2013 11:50 am

So i know that the wipers on my 05 are practically possessed. For years whenever i used the intermittent wipe setting the wipers danced to their own tune, a single wipe slow, a double wipe fast, whatever it wanted to do. I never complained because at least they worked ( much better than my lockers )! So two days ago on my way to work i hit the wipers to knock off a little snow. The wipers popped up an inch and stopped. I checked for icing up and all the usual stuff and while i watched they popped up another inch. I wiped the windshield with a towel. 25 minutes into my commute the wipers kicked up right into my line of sight, and five minutes later they started functioning normally. I used the switch in all the settings and it was as it should be. Yesterday i needed the wipers right away for frost and got nothing. About a minute later they popped up an inch. I couldn't drive so I stole my wifes car for work. Today i checked the relay and swapped it out with another one. Didnt fix it - still no wipers. Any ideas for a self - help fix or am i doomed to return to the stealership?

It is probably the contacts in the steering wheel. From what I have seen there are no wires that go directly to the switch, instead they terminate in a contact plate that the switch connects to in the steering wheel. If it isn't the relay or the motor than like the switch isn't making good contact with the contact plate. What I have found that works sometimes if you have the tilt steering. Turn on the wipers and than unlock the tilt and push the steering wheel up and down while it is on. I have done the same thing with my blinkers and it has cleaned the contact plate by doing that.

Worth a try. Either that or add more blinker fluid

On my 06 the signals started acting weird. Went to dealer and there was a TSB for the signal lever which also controls your wipers. They replaced it for free.

Good to know. I tried moving the steering wheel up and down with the wiper switch in the on position and still its broke. Guess i need to check into the TSB. Do you know if it covered 05's too? It'd sure be nice to NOT get ripped of by the stealership just once!

Hey just wondering how many of you have a flickering bright lights indicator light? When my dims are on there is a faint flickering of my bright lights indicator light. I wonder if this is all connected?

The Dealership payed for the replacement of my Module. But that was about 4yrs ago. I know it wasn't Warranty because that was run out, so it must have been a recall or bulletin.

Mine does the same thing, but it is very faint so I can't see it if I look straight at it but if I look to the side of the guages I can see it in my periferal (something about the side of my retina being more sensitive to light).

I always wondered why it flickered like that, but everything else works fine.

I think I've got the same issue - I can barely see a light flickering as I'm driving, but when I try to see which one it is I can't tell.

I've also got the wiper issue...instead of intermittent, the wiping seems to be pretty much randomly spaced and sometimes it'll wipe two times in a row. I've also occasionally had the wipers come on and make just one swipe when the switch is turned off, though that's only happened a few times.

I've been ignoring the issue, but after your post I might have to look into it...I can't really afford to have them stop working completely. I always assumed that mine were acting up because I'd hit them on a lot of tree branches when off-roading, and I know that the linkage is a bit messed up. Plus, my horses have chewed on the passenger's-side wiper a few times, and they weren't very gentle...for some reason horses find wiper blades really fascinating (and tasty). I might have to give the whole steering-column tilting thing a try, to see if that helps.

There is a bulletin out there for the 05 PW wipers malfunctioning. I had mine replaced about 5 years ago.

I still have some issues with my wipers, granted it has not happened in almost a year now. When I hit my remote unlock, the wiper blades would come on for one swipe. I always looked at it as she does what I do when I first wake up, rub my eyes  .

Our trucks have a mind of their own, which is why I find myself talking to her alot. She needs to know that she is loved, JUST like a woman

I've been looking for the TSB or recall that includes the 2005 Power Wagon or Ram 2500 and am having a really tough time finding it. Do any of you happen to have the TSB or Recall number hidden away somewhwer? My local stealership (not many options around here) says they can't find anything regarding my truck to cover the cost of repair :box: (likely story)... anyway I'll keep searching online. Any help would be appreciated.
