Trackbar or other popping sound

Post by PWJouster » Wed Sep 02, 2020 9:13 pm

Still think it’s your trackbar?

Why I can’t locate the continued popping/thrusting sounds emanating from the undercarriage is beyond me.

It comes, it’s goes. It has to be the trackbar and axle shifting, by why can I not discern any abnormal wear or movement in this bolt and thuren bar setup.

Has anyone welded on a gusseted tube mount for their trackbar?

It’s not just a sound, as I can physically feel a clicking/shifting through the wheel/pedals... if you know what I mean.

Many of us fall fate to loose trackbar movement by why won’t it go away...

Have you looked at you upper intermediate steering shaft coupler? The rubber in the isolator fails and you will get slop and a click in the wheel that can also be felt in the brake/throttle as they are all part of the same sub-assembly attached to the firewall. EMF has a press in bushing fix that I did in-place without removing the upper shaft.

The lower intermediate shaft u-joint might also be worn.

I know that lower joint on mine is going bad or I have excessive slop developing in the steering box at 75k... (I just haven't taken the time to figure out which it is, I don't think it is the Thuren track (check torque spec) bar, nor the balljoints.

already have the emf bushing fix completed.

Im still confident this is occuring from the axles shifting, not so much from the steering input itself.
off camber road crown shifts(regrading/repaving highway) with no steering input will still thrust a pop sound from the trackbar (i think)

Is everything on the track bar still torqued to specs? If the jan nut came loose on frame end, then it very well be the track bar. Unfortunately, the bar has to come out to check the jam nut, or at least does on my wagon.

Ok on the bushing then.

I feel it most in a gentle left sweeper at 50+. I can feel it in the wheel clicking at it goes back and forth. Wonder if it would be visible (or audible) with a well placed GoPro...

Have someone start the truck and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth. While you are looking at all the suspension points. Pay attention to the trackbar mounting points. Also check your u-joints and ball joints.

I had this problem in my 2014 and they replaced my whole steering column under warranty.

a well placed GoPro...
this is what i was going to try next. i also have a rear end tactile contact noise over large bumps through the compression motion of the shock.
could be that shock/frame contact that was noticed a few weeks ago. was going to try and find that as well

i have tried this, but this popping sound, like others, started after the thuren lift and trackbar, not that i blame the thuren product...very early in the 2018s life so my assumption was never ujoints or ball joints which all seem toight.

i would rather blame non gusseted trackbar mounts as the thuren bar is nearly bombproof.

stock axle, shock, and trackbar mounts are not always up to par with end user abuse. :winchmob:
