2017 Decal on RAMBOX

Post by Torq » Sun Aug 16, 2020 3:18 am

I've heard the complaints, and now I'm experiencing it first hand. The paint on my drivers side RAMBOX has inexplicably started to flake away. My first thought was that it must've been impacting the RTT when the RAMBOX was opened, but I checked and there's plenty of clearance. No nicks or scratches either. From what I can tell, there's no priming on the surface under the paint either...

Regardless of how or why it's happening, I've called around about repairs and I have two scenarios:

1. Local paint and body shops can repaint for around $150, but won't promise decal reattachment

2. Dealership will fix it for around $700; not sure if I can get this covered under warranty

If warranty won't cover it, I'll go with the local body shops. In that case I'll have to deal with the decal myself. I suspect I can peel it off with a heat gun and a gentle touch. I don't have much experience with body work though. Anyone ever try to remove/reapply decals?

Won't work, period. Unfortunately even with a heat gun they will stretch and deform as you remove them, as well as rip, tear, and fall apart. I removed the Power Wagon graphics off my 2016 in 105* heat (black truck, no need for a heat gun), and the adhesive was still a pain in the ass to let loose.

You're better off buying the decal set for the appropriate side and having a local body shop do the work. But look around, a quality body shop should carry a lifetime guarantee on their craftsmanship (the one I work for does). Not worth spending the time and money to fix a blemish that small only to have shoddy workmanship foul it up further down the road and have to go through the process again.
