offroad gimbal mounts for action cams like gopro?

Post by jsims006 » Tue Jul 30, 2019 9:33 am

What are you guys doing for video mounts on your trucks for outdoor footage? I was thinking a gimbal mount would be best, that I could attach to the windshield and remove when its not being used. I would like something inside to be protected but im not opposed to mounting it on the hood. Ultimately something I could mount behind the front seats that would captures my passengers flopping about would be hilarious.

I was thinking something that could stay with the horizon at all times and they have some pretty impressive motorized gimbals. Of course expensive too haha. Im not a fan of shooting my headliner or dash though.

Just thinking of options.

The high end stuff is amazing. But the few hundred doable stuff isn’t bad.

But I can’t give recommendations as I just watch people do this, not do it myself.

I use the GoPro vacuum mount on the windshield. Stick it at the very top and in the center. This way, and wipers won't hit it. I also have a GoPro stick-on mount on the front bumper, in the center. Sometimes the remote switch or my phone will not work with the cameras here. I use both a GoPro Hero 3 Black and a Garmin Virb cameras. If you are using a GoPro. Get a polarized lens filter for it.

In my track car. I use a Ram mount on the cross bar behind the seats.

A gimbal mount will not keep the image stable if you are bouncing down the path. Gimbals only help with roll, pitch and yaw movement, not up and down and it needs some kind of dampening or it will just rock and roll all over the place. You need image stabilization.

yeah the new gopro/variants are AMAZING when it comes to stabilization WITHOUT a gimbal. You'll want either the gopro 7 black or the DJI osmo action

See the truck video? I would like to eliminate the horizontal sway of the camera when its tilting through the mud holes. Keep the camera flat but the truck movement would be ok. Your video the camera sways with the truck movement. Would a gimbal help that?

I don't know. I've had quite a few branches hit the camera. The branches might ruin the gimbel mount.

You probably still don't need a gimbal. The camera moving/tilting would give a sense of movement, plus the stabilization would take care of the annoying jittery look that older cameras have because of the lack of stabilization.

Nice videos, Russ. Too bad the MPH doesn't show. Doesn't your Garmin show MPH?

The Garmin shows mph with gps, or if you have the doggle plugged in under the dash. You can use the vehicle speedometer
