Seriously, a dual band, fully programmable HAM radio for $43.50.
At that price, there is no excuse. You can become a HAM for a whopping $58.50 - the license adds an additional $15.00 to the total once you take and pass the Tech exam.
Just got a Baofeng UV 5RA from Amazon.com. I'll be checking it out to see how it does. So far I'm impressed. The audio output is loud and clear - nice for a noisy 4x4.

For those of you that understand this kinda stuff, this gentleman has done some serious testing.

I'm finding a lot of info on these little radios!

This manual programming advice is spot on, and works well. I've input both simplex and PL tone repeaters into memory. With the PL tone repeaters, I've sorted my repeater list by PL tone, and that way I only have to set that menu once for all the repeaters that use that tone. Here locally most use 162.2 for the PL tone, so it's pretty easy to enter the stuff. I'm only doing a few so I can keep track of what's in it...

Thanks, and it sure was Michael. I've got most of those in the PW (2m) and Jeep (2M/70CM) - they are both modded for transmitting out of band. The cheap HT comes with the transmission open from the factory - not sure how they got that thru the FCC, but it's Part 90 and Part 95 certified.

Does that radio conform to the ne narrow band requirements. I have the business band license but no ham license as of yet. I figure at 5watt it will not be a big issue? Thoughts?
Do you know if the radio can be modified to comply with the new narrow banding rules? None of my old radios can be modified so I'm kind of screwed on radios for now.

Ken, It does comply with the business band Part 90 FCC rules, and can be set for narrow band use.
