Driving at highway speed, watch your Tach reading and see if the trans is locking and unlocking several times a minute in the 5th or 6th overdrives. It should stay locked up even with very slight presses on the accelerator.

I guess I should engage my front locker some time this year

If you aren't going to do the work yourself, and you really want a Power Wagon, then I'd look for good used one. Sell off whatever parts you can from your "wrecked" truck and scrap the rest! Just my $0.02.

Update: Spent the time and did a front differential rebuild minus the axle lock pieces. They were in fact what failed in my differential.
