Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
Recently had an opportunity to haul a load of concrete block on a longer trip.
In Tow/Haul mode, the 6.4 averaged 11.2 mpg hauling the 7-ton loaded trailer.
The trailer has excellent brakes, so slowing and stopping is never an issue. But I can tell you, the trailer brakes need to be setup properly, because there's not a lot of excess braking capacity with the Power Wagon's stock brakes.
Transmission temp hovered around 175 degrees - and the tires that I keep at 65 psi cold, settled in at 73 psi rear and 70 psi front.

My towing experiences have been spot on with yours.... other than the fuel mileage With our 4 ton travel trailer we average more around 8.5-9 MPG. I suppose it has much more wind resistance, though.
Averaging 1700 miles per year?!?!?

Yeah - my Power Wagon isn't my daily driver.olyelr wrote:My towing experiences have been spot on with yours.... other than the fuel mileage With our 4 ton travel trailer we average more around 8.5-9 MPG. I suppose it has much more wind resistance, though.

I have a '12 CTD mega cab that's low mileage, and an Expedition that's low mileage, and my Impala (with MDS) that's my daily driver.
I didn't really need to buy the Power Wagon, but I was debt free and wanted a low interest loan on something fun to keep my credit active.

Any air bags or timbrens on that truck? She doesn't seem to squat terribly with that heavy of a load.

Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
Pretty close to what I get towing the Airstream since I switched to the heavier 35's. Before I was averaging 12-13 easily.

Actually no - it's stock suspension. From the amount the rear end dropped, the tongue weight was probably around 1,300-1,500 pounds.NickTF wrote:Any air bags or timbrens on that truck? She doesn't seem to squat terribly with that heavy of a load.
With the 10%-15% tongue weight rule, I tend to lean closer to the 10% tongue weight. Our trucks are heavy - so we can get away with lighter tongue weights - but don't try it with a half ton or mini van
Too little tongue weight and you will get some sway when a tractor trailer passes by (or it is really windy). Shift some weight from the back to the front and the occasional sway will vanish. You can do this with a camper too...

What the heck, my beat year wagon has a hard time getting 12-13 when empty.

I got better mpg with taller tires, better highway ratio. Checked with calculator too, speedo is right. Best I got was 18 with the Yoko 37"s AT but they're as light as many 35" MTs.olyelr wrote:MikeKey wrote:Pretty close to what I get towing the Airstream since I switched to the heavier 35's. I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
Holy cow I got 13mpg on flat ground going 55-60 with no stops on 34's, I think around 1500-1600rpm. Getting 12-13 at highway speed with 7000lbs is amazing.
Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
Eisenhower Tunnel in CO? Thats's a huge hill to pull serious weight on. I have seen youtube videos of trucks pulling heavy loads up that grade and it's no joke!Mule wrote:must be nice being at sea level...

Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
I am real damn close to sea level though, on a hemifever tune also. Easily get 16 on hwy and average 12-13 without trying on the 37"I Hankook MTs. It doesn't take much to kill it though.

Yup. Do that drive fairly often in the winter.agpilot wrote:Eisenhower Tunnel in CO? Thats's a huge hill to pull serious weight on. I have seen youtube videos of trucks pulling heavy loads up that grade and it's no joke!Mule wrote:must be nice being at sea level...

Nicer/easier to do with just a sled in the bed, but the PW gets my trailer up the hill pretty well too. Much better than my half-ton did.
Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
You guys all suck, getting that kind of mileage while towing ! But I knew that going in. 8-10 empty for me & 6-10 towing our new camper. I guess you know your geared low when you get the same empty or loaded.

Re: Gas Mileage towing 7 tons
I just finished my 2 week vacation with the family. We drove 2200 miles round trip. The truck, trailer, and cargo combined for roughly 14000 pounds. With 315s on the Wagon the average was 9 going up and down passes and elevation. Also had to deal with a lot of headwind.
