Tires! BFG KM3 Verus Toyo MT

Post by ramv » Fri Sep 21, 2018 10:55 pm

The Thuren toys showed up today. :jawdrop:

I ordered some AEV wheels. (17 x 8.5") Couldn't decide with all the aftermarket choices. Walker Evans was a close second

35"s. (Yes too small, but summer tires so I want to be able to pull my trailer and haul my side by side without a re gear.) Keeping 315s for the winter so I can run chains.)

I know both will have the offroad traction I need. I like the looks of both. Toyo higher load rating. (Which I might be bumping up against the 121..)
BFG, $150 cheaper, more common if I need a replacement.

Really, main concerns -- treadlife, durability, maybe noise a little bit.

Otherwise?

Thanks

315’s basically are 35’s.

KM3’s just came up and have not been proven at all. The tire line they are replacing is total garbage under a heavy vehicle. They’re cheaper because you’re only paying for the rubber of a 33” tire, which is what you’re getting. Someone at BFG forgot the calculation from metric to imperial was 25.4:1 and got all their tire sizes wrong.

Toyos? Tough. Durable. Average treadlife overall and wear quick right at the start but level out. Tough. Good off-road traction. Tough. Ok to poor winter traction. Tough. Durable. Hard to cut.

I like Toyos. They are a little heavy, the traction is good in the dry and in wet, pretty bad on ice. Not in love with them but three sets of tires now have survived everything my truck has seen. One flat Toyo ever, when I hit a buried rock so hard it bent the wheel from the inside out.

Nice. I figured I have my cheap BFG's for the winter (AT) and can go a little stouter for the summer. Winter wheeling is pretty light, small is good so I don't panic on chains . Summer is when I destroy side walls.

I have never owned a Toyo. I swore off Cooper after blowing 13 Pro Comp Xterrains (all under warranty) on my second gens (315/75R16) and the Duratracs went to hell on this truck. (I had two sets on my last truck and no complaints.) My next winter tires will be Nitto EXO Grappler AWT I think.

Don’t sign off the Duratracs for a winter tire. They work very well. STOCK, OEM supplied duratracs are absolutely terrible. The real ones you can buy anywhere are much better quality.

Ok cool. Yeah the stock ones sucked. Come to think of it, I never ruined one of the replacements I bought.

To be clear I had a flat on a Duratrac replacement with in only a couple of thousand miles, same sort of glass belt failure under the fish skin design. It had replaced one that completely exploded destroying a rim.

I don't have any knowledge of the Toyos, but the resistance to puncture of the BFGs, traction, and long tread life have always attracted me. Now that the cost has come down comparatively its a better bargain. Its true the size is ridiculously undersized, although somehow still gained a bunch over stock, enough to throw speedo off by 10%.(measures 33.5") And they are not easy to get either. BFG has had supply chain problems for 15-20 years now.

I'm running the E rated KM3's on stock wheels on my 17' and so far so good. I run KM2's on my short wheel base 7000lb Scout in 33 x 10.50 x 15 and have had no issues either on the highway at as close to 70 as I can go, or in the rocks (what a TX resident calls rocks so Marble Falls/Big Bend) with no chunking or abnormal wear or sidewall issues. The KM3's at 35" measure out at 34" exactly at the outside hip so they are short. My 15" 33's measure out at a little over 33" on an 8" wheel. Since we have been inclemently wet lately I'll say they match or exceed the wet feel of the stock tires and they are beyond an improvement in ride and feel. Since I was able to do most of Big Bend off-road with the stock set up I really don't have any plans on lifting or modifying the truck (you can call me out for this statement at a later date) as I purchased it with the intent to use it as the most capable stock off-road offering to date. Tires are like underwear, opinions, etc. so I'll say I like them and although I wanted a 35" tire to fit the truck, the KM3's do a much better job of filling the huge wheel well void while performing better than stock and although short I have had no rubbing at full lock, slightly articulated or with a decent load so they fit without modification which is what I was looking for.

I would almost bet a 37” km3 would fit without modification.

After having to plug a Duratrac in the woods yesterday (literally just driving dirt roads) I ordered Toyos. I thought hard about the KM3s but I couldn’t find any real reviews of them on an HD for any amount of time. I know what I’m getting with the Toyo this time around but will keep an eye on the KM3 for the next time I need tires.

Nah (again willing to bet), they are more like a short 36" tire.

According to the website, they don't have a 37" KM3 yet

Not yet for 17" wheels... but they do have a 39x13.5 which should be all of a true 37  (although its load range C)

Where do you buy your Toyos?

If you're considering BFG's then maybe Toyo RT's or Nitto Ridge Grapplers would be a better fit. My Toyo RT's have been boringly perfect.

Continued musings over 35" tires no with some miles under my belt. Other then needing to deflate and use a giant crowbar to get your spare put back....I still am blown away by how gearing, traction, shift points, stability, handling.....It sure feels like these trucks were engineered with 35s in mind then the bean counters got involved and said no, must use wimpy tires and make them 33s....

And who ever told me gas mileage will go up and I said they were smoking some crack :excited: IT DID. Got 16MPG on a trip to Silverton Colorado. Never got that high before. Crazy. Sorry. :duel:

That’s good fuel mileage for 35’s. What pressure were you running in those 35’s when you got that mileage?

With the stock 33’s at 65-70 psi, my Power Wagon always gets just over 17 mpg on the highway if I keep it below 75 mph. That is on summer blend without ethanol. With winter blend, the best I get on the highway is around 16.5 mpg.
This fuel mileage is thanks to MDS, CAD, 4.10 gears, and the high speed 6th overdrive that we have

The trip odometer in my PW compared my gps. Both read 100.0 miles with the 33's. When I switched to the 35's. When my trip odometer hits 100.0 my gps reads 106.1. I figured that I have about 4,200 miles that's not showing.

First I don't run below 5,000' in elevation, and the trip to Silverton goes up to 12,000' and back. So not ideal. Slow roads mostly 75MPH but some much slower.( 35mph near our land we bought) I have the system corrected for tire size with the Pro Cal. Seems accurate. I run 40PSI. With the Dura Trash I never dared run over 35PSI as flat tires per day went up. I see no reason to run over 40PSI, and I live off-road and my gut cant take 65PSI of punishment every day.
That is summer blend. Winter blend is just around the corner.

Yes, the higher elevations choke away your power! Threads on the site here where I quantified the amount of reduced power at elevation.

Some say that your payload should be decreased by 2% for every 1000' increase in elevation, starting at 1000'. Example: If heading up to 10,000' - that would be a 20% reduction in payload. 5000' would be 10%, & so on & so forth. I am sure turbo chargers would help greatly vs just a stock gas engine.
