It's not a Frankenstein trans. It's a HD version of the 545rfe. It's a good transmission. My coworkers nextdoor build it. My good friend has the job of tearing down warranty returns and documenting the failures. Most of the issues found are related to debris found in the trans causing something to hang up or malfunction. Something as small as an eyelash sometimes. I'm just sharing what a better trans fluid did for me. It really was a night and day difference.

Welp. Dealer has been in touch over the last two weeks...first they did all the recalls and a software update of sort. For some reason they thought the trans solenoid pack recall was going to fix the whine. Nope.

Today they called me and said the truck needs a a new front trans pumps as "it's about to go". Not really what I wanted to hear as a diagnosis for a truck that has 16k on the clock and is 2 years old. Not thrilled that they are going to pull the trans to replace the pump. Also wondering what secondary damage a pump that's "about to go" could do to the rest of the trans over time. Yuck..

My 16 has 30K on it now and it runs they way it should,,,now. But that was after an EGR valve, the solenoid pack and having everything reflashed a couple of times. I'm finally happy with the way the trans shifts and no surging.
Man, wish I could say the same. This tranny has me ready to throw the truck in the garbage. Guess im going to have to actually try to do something about it... i cant take it anymore.

My transmission must be about to go out because it works perfect. Changing gears really smoothed it out.

I have always felt that if the gearing were a bit lower (say 4.56’s or even 4.88’s with the stock tires) then the truck would probably drive and shift so much better (at least to my liking).

However, the shuddering must go now. And that is just the EGR valve?

Ahh....I misread his post. I read it as "changing gears really smoothed out" missed the "it"

ok.. So here is a a bit of an update. Got a call from the dealer yesterday afternoon saying the truck was done. First thing today i made the half hour drive down to the dealer. After 29 days, I was excited to get my truck back.

Guy pulled the truck up and I could tell that the whine sound was still there. Took it for a spin around the parking lot and sure enough, the same exact whine sound is still there. Trans tech that worked on the truck is out today so I had to leave it.

I am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about the level of knowledge or diagnostic ability shown by the dealer at this time. This is a very large dealer about 3 miles from the Chrysler headquarters here in MI.

So far they have done the following:
T15 - Trans Solenoid pack recall
T79 - Brake transmission shift interlock recall
U61 - Reprogram powertrain control module
Front trans pump replacement
Performed BCM update

So.. I want to say I read something about a pinion seal/bearing issue on the 2500 trucks that could cause a whine or howl. The whine my truck has is more pronounced at slow speeds and lower RPMs. Not to say it isn't there at higher speeds, I just cant pick it out over the tire and wind noise. I suspect it is still there.
To me it sounds like a torque converter but the truck isn't throwing codes. Is there anything else I could point out to the dealer that the should be looking at? Seems as if the computer isn't "telling" them what the problem is then they are clueless. I am getting frustrated and may just trade the damn thing in when I get it back.

Do you hear the whine while idling stationary in park or in gear, or does the truck have to be moving to hear the noise? If movement is required, I would be examining everything on the output shaft of the trans and beyond.

I've experienced a singing seal before, it's just like running your finger around the rim of a wine glass (requires just the right combination of friction and speed). Usually some added lubricant on the lip of the seal will solve that issue.

A torque converter and front pump will make noise, even when the truck is stationary.

Thanks guys. I am going to look again. Can somone send me a link for the needle that works for this application? Amazon?

I will keep you posted on the trans issues. Dropped the truck off this morning.
A little late on the reply, but I just got this and it works great!

The tip is narrower and sharper than any I've used. It also appears to be hardened. I have a dedicated pistol type grease gun that I use and just keep refilling the cartridge with Red Line grease
Kind of makes me wonder if I was getting much, if any, grease into the cardan joint for the last 13 years
The picture on Amazon is not accurate. Scroll down to the reviews and look at the picture of the three different tips, the one on the left is what it really looks like.
