I replied on your thread. The software update didn't fix anything for me. Going to discuss the EGR with them. If they want to charge me anything i'm going to do it myself. The surging is really getting annoying. Having to drive a 3/4 ton work truck like a big cammed hot rod to avoid the surging is super stupid.Sweet5ltr wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 2:51 pm** Nick, be sure to print this out and bring it with you. Tell them this is exactly what you want done (as being verified your PCM has this update), as your truck has been hesitating and stuttering, and other members of a RAM forum have found this to be a solution.

Here is the Mopar MDS delete. I think you can use the Hellcat lifters and leave the oil solenoids in place.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Are the 6.4 truck hemi motors with a closed lifter valley like LS GM motors which require the removal of cylinder heads to access lifters or are they open valley?
I wonder if there are differences between the non-mds truck lifters and the hellcat lifters???

You have to pull the heads. I'm told the lifters in all 6.4s and 6.2HCs are interchangeable.

Finally got around to ordering part #04627465AF and gasket #04627612AA. Will install later this week hopefully and see if it cures the surging.
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Interesting observation: I just unplugged the EGR valve and went for a ride. The throttle surging appeared to be less but to avoid a placebo effect i'd need to drive the truck more and report back. What result, besides a mcnasty light on the dash, does unplugging the EGR valve and driving like that have? I would presume it closes when disconnected?
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
So, after driving the truck a full day with the egr harness unplugged I can most definitely say 90-95% of the surging is gone. I'd suggest anyone wanting to rule out their egr causing their surging just pop the hood and spend 1 minute to unplug the egr and go for a ride a few times. You'll get an engine light after the second ignition cycle with the egr unplugged but I believe that will go away after a few ignition cycles with it plugged back in. The new EGR valve is on the way and i'll likely just leave the current EGR unplugged until it arrives. Years back when I did a bit of exhaust work on this truck I was shocked at how much carbon was inside of the pipes. I have no doubt the excessive opening of the EGR is a large part of why so much carbon was present in the exhaust.
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Interesting observation, the eco mode light has not illuminated since the engine light came on after the second ignitiion cycle with the egr unplugged. On my first test drive the eco light would come on normally. Since the engine light illuminated however no eco light. I can still hear and feel the truck engaging eco mode as normal, just not illuminating the eco light when it engages.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Can you modify the valve to remain closed but leave it plugged in?
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Good question and not sure. I would presume the system would read some form of insufficient activity from the valve if setup to remain shut and trigger the engine light which would defeat the entire purpose.DamageWagon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 12:36 pmCan you modify the valve to remain closed but leave it plugged in?

Back in the day, we used to make a solid gasket out of an aluminum can to inhibit EGR flow. However now they use the computer to monitor 02 sensor response to EGR function as well as a temperature sensor in the EGR system. You’ll still get a nanny light.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
So I installed the new EGR on sunday. It is easy taking one hour to swap with me going over everything slowly and meticulously. The check engine light went out after two full ignition cycles without having to reset anything.
observations:
-with check engine light off eco mode now illuminates on the dash again. As indicated before the truck never stopped going into eco mode, but with the check engine light illuminated eco mode light would no longer illuminate.
-with the egr unplugged the truck seemed a pinch lethargic. I suspect the OEM programming reduces timing or fattens the air fuel ratio up just a pinch when no egr is detected by the computer. I don't believe this to be a placebo effect, it was noticeable.
-The surging has pretty much returned but again so did the pep the truck had before unplugging the EGR. At this point I just think it is a characteristic of these motors and i'm writing it off as such. Maybe tuning with deleting the EGR would change this but i'm not interested. My truck has about 57-58k on the clock. Perhaps the truck could use a set of plugs but i'm not worrying about it right now unless behavior gets worse.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
I can't help but think you have a tuning issue. My truck drives normally (when the lifters aren't going out) without surging. The computer has been updated at least three times this year.
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
I don't think the eco light signifies any "mode" and isn't tied directly to the MDS. I could be mistaken but I thought I read somewhere that it was just an idiot light tied to throttle/vacuum like in the old days.NickTF wrote: ↑Tue Jul 17, 2018 9:37 amSo I installed the new EGR on sunday. The eco mode light has come on in lock step with eco mode since I’ve had this truck from February 2015 to present.

The fuel I put in my truck has a large effect on how it runs. 87 octane causes surging and shifting issues. 89 runs great so that's what I put in it.

My EGR was replaced at first service. Invoice annotated with EGR inspected and replaced under warranty. Assume there must be a range of numbers affected or EGR doesn't do or do something.
Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
From day 1 my truck has always been filled with 87 octane. I will toss some 93 in on next fill up and see if the behavior changes at all. I don't hear spark knocking with 87 but anything is possible.Rodeoflyer wrote: ↑Sat Jul 21, 2018 2:23 pmThe fuel I put in my truck has a large effect on how it runs. 87 octane causes surging and shifting issues. 89 runs great so that's what I put in it.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
I don’t notice any difference between 89 and 91/93 but a big difference in 87 and 89. I have surging and just poor drivability with 87 so I get the gas card that helps to alleviate the price difference and put 89 in the truck.
I also keep MDS disabled by driving in 5th gear all the time even on the highway. It doesn’t make a spit of difference with mpg and my heavy 35’’ MT’s.

Re: 2015 6.4 Hemi EGR Issues?
Same here, huge difference in 87 & 89. I don't bother with anything other than 89. Now, there is a pump up near Stanley, Idaho they have 89 Ethanol free. All the Ethanol free pumps here in Boise are 87 (probably for boats) - but I've seen a nice improvement in MPG when I can fill the tank with that 89 Ethanol free. It just sucks, because it's usually a whole dollar more than 89 back in Boise. But if you ever have the chance to try it, it's worth the spendy every now and then.Rodeoflyer wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 10:03 amI don’t notice any difference between 89 and 91/93 but a big difference in 87 and 89. 87 Ethanol free didn't seem to run any better than regular 87. My truck feels like it's lacking power on 87. Runs good enough for down the road, but it def feels like the grunt is missing up a hill.

You will get less power and lower fuel mileage running 10% ethanol 87 Octane gasoline than you will running ethanol free 87 octane.

My truck gets about 2mpg better economy with non ethanol 91 octane. It's like $4.50/gal though.
